And to finish off we have The Longwalls stalking a line between noisy post-pop and twang with new tune Kowloon, which is the title track from a new 8 track EP. Then there is another taste from Theatre Royal’s forthcoming album At The End Of A River, The Sea… in the shape of prophetic track Will England Rain Itself Dry? The Pinery Boy is brilliant roadhouse honky-tonk inspired Americana from The Emperors Of Wyoming, and lastly Golden Void have offered up this free download of their cover of Jimi Hendrix’s 1983.

Much like another MM fave Wooden Wand, wandering modern day minstrel D.B. Rouse seems capable of prolific output without suffering the usual accompanying decline in quality control. And so it is that he has released a new digital album Vaudeville Routine via his Bandcamp page where it can again be picked up for a “pay what you want deal”.

He told us “It’s a new album and it’s by far my best… it all came in a mad burst of energy….  I had a hard time picking out only two to send you… I’m very attached to all of them…  take a listen.”

Not only that, but we also noticed a further release on his Bandcamp called Blood Whiskey and or Whiskey Blood by Sickday Danger. The esteemed Mr Rouse played guitar in the band who in 2006, set upon the daunting task of making the best drinking album. Ever. The perfect soundtrack to the ‘college experience’. Only now is it seeing the light of day.

Anyway, it is a highly laudable inspiration for an album in our book and again it is available for free, but you can always check out the wonderfully titled Effigy Doll Blues (The Drinking Song) below.

New Album From D.B. Rouse

New Album From D.B. Rouse.

Ex Goat farmer, salmon packer, and pawn shop cashier D.B. Rouse has crossed the MM radar a few times in the past. For as well as all those things, he is a roaming, itinerant troubadour of the old-school, and of the best kind. Like another MM fave Wooden Wand, he also appears to have the rare ability to maintain quality whilst producing an output that would shame most musicians.

The latest release is an eight track album titled The Good Land and he describes it as ”a kind of upbeat and dark thing that I threw myself into in Milwaukee, Wisconsin“. For the curious out there, the name Milwaukee finds its origins in the Potawatomi language, and roughly translates to ‘the good land‘.

So what’s not to like about that?

Check Out The Make Good Choices Free Digital Compilation.

D.B. Rouse who we have featured a couple of times on MM dropped us a line to tell us about Make Good Choices, a free digital compilation that features 15 different bands and musicians from across the US, the majority of whom were found in the Austin, TX area.

Of course it includes Mr Rouse himself, which should tell you something about the quality contained therein. Other artists include the excellently named Happy Horse Campfire Band, The Better Halves, Ditto Kiddo, Soulfoot Mombits and Decker.

You can download the whole thing for free from their Bandcamp page here, or if you are of a more cautious nature download a couple of samplers from it below – a crunching effort from Abnormal Cattle and the wonderfully titled Cold Beer Sara (one for our very own Big Sair surely) by The Sorrys and of course, any excuse to repost D.B. Mad Mackerel Recommends...D.B. Rouse. D.B. Rouse was born and raised in the north woods of Wisconsin, but he’s travelled everywhere with his guitar and worked in Alaska, in Maine, on a Cruise Ship in the Atlantic, and on a horse ranch near Austin Texas. He’s been a goat farmer and a lounge singer, a bartender and a pawn shop cashier, he’s packaged salmon and he’s harvested blueberries.

His latest EP is called Repent and on its seven songs, his wanderings and ramblings from his time spent on the road are beautifully captured and displayed for all to hear. It is music with a restlessness at its heart, a yearning to keep moving, and a quiet acceptance to face whatever is round the corner, whether it be good or bad, with the same equilibrium and philosophy.

Repent is a superb collection of beautifully judged poignancy and pathos, of self-reflection, regrets and dreams and it deserves a wide audience. Have a listen to one of our favourite tracks.
