The old day job has provided less joy than usual recently, and it was with much sadness that we waved goodbye to the lovely Polly Pocket this week. The occasion was marked by a visit to the local farm café. It was a shame the red-faced old buzzard was circling but next to the organic turkeys, you’d barely notice the difference. In skin tone and … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (17th December)
Here at MM we share, chat, argue, bury and praise music on a pretty regular basis…like daily. So throughout the year, the Mackerel crew (Mrs Mackerel, Barry-Sean, Christy-Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Starbar, MM and others) keep their own ever-changing top tens ready for publication at the climax of the festive season. This year, to start the ball rolling we have, the already much missed … Continue reading Mad Mackerel’s 2010 Top Ten Series: No 1, Polly Pocket
Earlier this month, The Blue Walrus music blog asked us to participate in their Home & Away series – where 12 blogs pick two artists, one from their home town and one from anywhere else, that they would like to see get the exposure they deserve in 2011. We thought it was a great idea, and our submission is up today. So if you’re interested … Continue reading The Mackerel Befriends The Walrus

Instead it is a giveaway via John Darnielle’s Twitter account. Damn good as well. Visit the Mountain Goats MySpace here. So after much deliberation, head scratching, discussion, and more head scratching, we have MM’s favourite albums of 2010. And we choose our words very carefully here, because we would not presume them to be the best, only those that have given us the most pleasure and enjoyment, records that we have returned to again and again, and for whatever reason have captured a moment or … Continue reading Mad Mackerel’s Albums of the Year
We got this track, Colt 44 by The Range Rats, via Rollo & Grady, and were instantly taken with its Johnny Cash rumble and gun toting lyrics. We’ve not been able to find out much about them. Their MySpace page says they’ve been around since 2006 and hail from Oregon and apparently last released an album in 1985…Other than that…who knows. We like the song … Continue reading Introducing…The Range Rats

As a holiday gift to all blogs and online magazines etc., Tempe, AZ band, Gospel Claws have recorded a cover of one of their favorite tunes, Like A Friend from Pulp’s This Is Hardcore. Having recently released their album C-L-A-W-S to much critical acclaim, the quintet play a soul-inflected rock with a swagger and poise that is nothing if not infectious. So take a listen … Continue reading Gospel Claws cover Pulp for Christmas
