We’ve grabbed ourselves a whole host of free stuff recently from Noisetrade, Insound and American Songwriter that is just too good not to share.

Noisetrade have put up free downloads from Said The Whale, Josh Rouse & The Long Vacations, Rachael Yamagata, The Kansas Bible Country and Joshua James (with a free download of his brilliant 2009 album Build Me This).

Insound’s latest free mixtape features (amongst others) The Amazing, Ex-Cult, Fuzz, Lust For Youth, Mac DeMarco, Mogwai, Naomi Punk, Of Montreal, People Get Ready and The Soft Moon. As always though it is only up for a limited time…

Finally American Songwriter’s free November Muse sampler includes twelve excellent tracks from the likes of Patterson Hood, Dwight Yoakum, The Raveonettes, Simone Felice, Houndmouth and Aaron Embry.

But just in case you need convincing, check out Said The Whale’s wonderful, breezy indie-rock with more than an echo of the Decemberists literary thoughtfulness. Then follow it with the the upbeat folky strum of Josh Rouse’s infectious Diggin’ In The Sand.

The insistent melody and support from lap steel and organ belie the bitterness at the heart of Joshua James’ Wilted Daisies (“Your small apartment is a mess but you don’t seem to care, 
The dirty dishes in the corner go with the broken chairs
, And higher grows the stack of bills that calmly declare
, If you don’t pay within a week then your shit is theirs”). 

Meanwhile The Kansas Bible Company demonstrate their heady mix of brass, indie rock and ska on Jesus, The Horse Thief, and by contrast the pure, simple despair and sorrow of Rachael Yamagata’s Line is a perfect late night soundtrack for the heartbroken. From the Insound Mixtape, Denison Witmer’s In Your Hands is as authentic a slice of dusty highway Americana as you’re likely to find anywhere.

Finally, from American Songwriter we’ve picked Little Death Shaker from Raymond Byron & The White Freighter, a combination of gauzy harmonies and sparse, buzzing guitar riffs that combine to create something dark, dreamy and imperfectly pretty.
