MM Shorts 346: John Denver Tribute

The compilation The Music Is You: A Tribute to John Denver sees an official release today and features artists including Sharon Van Etten, J Mascis, Evan Dando, Lucinda Williams, Josh Ritter, Emmylou Harris and many more reinterpreting some of the pop icon’s classic tunes.

Listen to a few choice selections from it below and order it via iTunes (USA) here.

Mad Mackerel's Monday Morning Threesome. Here’s a good way to start the working week – with a triple helping of top notch, indie goodness.

First up is the return of alt-Country pioneers Lambchop who will release their first album since 2008 in the form of Mr. M, which is a tribute to the great Vic Chesnutt. If Not I’ll Just Die is a smooth, almost jazz inflected cut that is shot through with the typical lyrical scalpel of Kurt Wagner.

We also have the reflective I’ve Been Thinking, the b-side to the new single (a cover of Edie Brickell’s Circle) from J Mascis. It was a bonus track on the Japanese edition of Several Shades of Why.

And lastly, Lissy Trullie will release her long awaited, self-titled debut album in March next year. As a taster, this is the slow-burning Madeleine that also features another MM fave, Holly Miranda on backing vocals. There are echoes of the Velvets, even a bit of shoegaze maybe, but all is anchored by a brilliant distorted groove and her brilliant voice. This bodes very well indeed…

Download Lambchop – If Not I’ll Just Die mp3 (from Mr. M)

Download J Mascis – I’ve Been Thinking mp3 (from Circle)

Download Lissy Trullie – Madeleine mp3 (from Lissy Trullie)

Here we are again. A mix of the best tracks we posted in February and a few new ones too. Twenty seven cracking songs to immerse yourself in!

Download O’Death – Bugs mp3 (from Outside)

Echoes of their ramshackle and punkish best, but this time it is cocooned in something more subtle and thoughtful too.

Download The Whalers – That Rabbit mp3 (from How The Ship Goes Down)

Playing a wonderfully straightforward blend of thudding, bass-heavy rock that makes us think of QotSA melded with the Black Angels and then given some 60s style reverb treatment.

Download Middle Brother – Me Me Me mp3 (from Middle Brother)

Classic rootsy Americana show indie supergroup can live up to the hype.

Download The Barettas – Touche mp3 (from Touche 7″)

An energy filled, rough edged pop number – like bubblegum wrapped around a six inch nail.

Download Creepoid – Grave Blanket mp3 (from Horse Heaven)

Top quality psych-rock and creeping reverb laden malevolence.

Download The Paperhead – Back To Those Days mp3 (from The Paperhead)

Shimmering, orchestrated pop layers, eastern influence and the groovy instrumentals of a classic British Psych record.

Download Hunters – Deadbeat mp3 (from Hunters / Dead Wife split 7″)

The tribal beat and brilliant riff is a perfect combination of the heavy and the accessible. Imagine The Vaselines making music with The Ruts on a chaotic acid binge.

Download Moon Duo – Mazes mp3 (from Mazes)

A must for any fans of psychedelia, drone-rock, stoner riffage or anything similar.

Download Left Lane Cruiser – Giving Tree mp3 (from Junkyard Speed Ball)

An effortless mix of southern-fried blues, garage, and brutal punk riffs into one glorious whiskey and gasoline soaked whole.

Download Trent Fox & The Tenants – Mess Around mp3 (from Mess Around EP)

Garage infused rock n roll with added swagger and a whole bunch of attitude.

Download Wolf Ram Heart – Viewgirls mp3 (from Betrayal of Hearts)

Ominous and brooding – a perfect example of dark hearted, pop psychedelia.

Download Jones Street Station – The Understanding mp3

A wonderful sense of melody and intricate rhythms played with a joyous abandon and sense of fun.

Download The Raveonettes – Forget That You’re Young mp3 (from Raven In The Grave)

Ghostly synths and chillingly beautiful riffs that leave you feeling simultaneously unsettled and enchanted.

Download Slug Guts – Hangin’ In The Pisser mp3 (from Howlin’ Gang)

Seething primal punk-blues holler with a twisted take on everything from goth to garage.

Download Brother Gruesome – Tubes mp3 (from For The Morphine Makes You Comfortable 7″)

Mixing a sound that has evolved from their dark folk roots with a full on Sabbath-esque interlude.

Download J Mascis – Not Enough mp3 (from Several Shades Of Why)

Acoustically tinged pop par excellence.

Download Hunx & His Punx – Lovers Lane mp3 (from Too Young To Be In Love)

Tongue-in-cheek homage to the Shangri-Las, doo-wop, bubblegum pop, beach cruising and prom night teenage angst and finishes with the obligatory spoken word denouement – this time with flamboyantly camp overtones.

Download Bored Man Overboard – Abigail mp3 (from Rogue)

Vibrant, dark and reserved, they tell stories about forgotten people, of resignation and subdued wine buzzes. The music sounds like it has been dragged screaming from being immersed in six months of darkness – a wonderful antidote to the empty pop fluff that abounds.

Download Wavves – Horse Shoes mp3

His finest moment since So Bored…?

Download Fosdyk Well – First Gravity mp3 (from Slumber And Stark Lots)

Off-kilter acoustic strum and a queasy feel combine in this brilliantly disorientating mix of uneasy folk and ambient experiment

Download Silver Shampoo – Streaks Of Satan mp3 (from Higher & Higher)

Top quality fuzzed out, reverbed up, psychotic blast of glamorous garage rock.

Download The Heavenly States – Model Son mp3 (from Oui Camera Oui EP)

A foot-stomper with added rasp, rhythm and groove.

And to finish off we have two excellent covers for you, Loch Lomond’s reverential take on a Fleetwood Mac classic and Bat for Lashes tackling Depeche Mode, as well as the first tastes from new albums by Summer Camp and Julian Lynch, and finally a brand new song from folkies Romany Rye.

Download Loch Lomond – The Chain mp3 (Fleetwood Mac cover)

Download Bat For Lashes – Strangelove mp3 (Depeche Mode cover)

Download Julian Lynch – Terra mp3 (from Terra)

Download Summer Camp – I Want You mp3

Download Romany Rye – I Hate Myself (For Loving You) mp3

Here are a bunch of tunes that we’ve meant to post about for a while, but wanted to do them a bit more justice too than it turns out we’re able. It is the regular refrain of blogs like ours we know, but it doesn’t make it feel like any less of a cop out to not find the time to write these up properly.

So, with apologies to the artists involved, here is a wonderful and eclectic mix for a wet Wednesday in February.

The Seedy Seeds will release new album Verb Noun, within the coming months. Blending elements of electronica with the typically analog sounds of banjo, strings, and vocal harmonies. The contrast is warm and inviting, creating energetic music that is equally at home alongside a dance remix as it is alt-country or lo-fi pop.

Download The Seedy Seeds – Verb Noun mp3 (from Verb Noun)

Wants is a new collection of four songs written and performed by one of our most introspective and romantic of artists, Dana Jewell. Dana’s love of beautiful women and deep thought shines through on each hand wrought track. Order from the excellent Underwater Peoples label here.

Download Dana Jewell – Wants mp3 (from Wants 7″)

Everyone knows J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. What you may not know is that his acoustically tinged new solo record, Several Shades Of Why, might be one of the best things he’s ever done.

Download J Mascis – Not Enough mp3 (from Several Shades Of Why)

Download J Mascis – Is It Done mp3 (from Several Shades Of Why)

The Rural Alberta Advantage have given us Stamp from new album Departing. It is a most enjoyable slab of anthemic indie rock.

Download The Rural Alberta Advantage – Stamp mp3 (from Departing)

Psychedelic-indie-pop duo, New Animal, from Georgia put their self-titled album out digitally last month for free. It has proved very popular and the whole thing can be got here and comes highly recommended.

Download New Animal – Ghost Police mp3 (from New Animal)

Football, etc will release their debut album The Draft this spring. It is indie-pop of the most infectious and sparklingly memorable kind.

Download Football, etc – Safety mp3 (from The Draft)

Download Football, etc – Sideline mp3 (from The Draft)

Oh Sunshine are another discovery via Rollo & Grady. A Japanese/US duo, I Belong To You is from their self-titled mini album and is warm, bluesy rock in the vein of Super Wild Horses.

Download Oh Sunshine – I Belong To You mp3 (from Oh Sunshine)

Lastly for today, Lullwater have just released their second album of raw, gritty indie rock. Titled Silhouette, we have a couple of tracks for your listening pleasure.

Download Lullwater – Let Me Out mp3 (from Silhouette)

Download Lullwater – One More Time mp3 (from Silhouette)
