Mrs Mackerel's TFI Friday 29th January

The midweek cocktail mission passed without incident or vomit. We have evolved into respectable pina colada swigging socialists in more ways than one. But just try saying ‘pina colada’ without ‘getting caught in the rain’. Well if I have to suffer, I don’t see why you shouldn’t too…

Tomorrow, I’m heading to Lahn-don. Travelling alone by train offers so many possibilities, mainly because I have no sense of direction. But still, the thrill of the adventure, disappearing amongst the many, meeting old friends and maybe making some new ones on the way. Yep, I will talk to almost anyone (being a curious sort of mackerel), only to return hours later in the twilight, at our sleepy little station where the silence almost deafens you. Perfect.

I went to see Sea of Bees, aka Julie Ann Baenziger, a few years ago. She was brilliant, utterly mesmerising. It was at a sweet pop-up venue in East Oxford; rather unfortunately, the support act was Trevor and Hannah Lou. As I recall, MM forced me to censor my rather forthright views about the dynamic duo. Tsk.

Anyway, I was going to do a seamless link and post Don’t Follow Me (because well don’t; you’re bound to get lost), but it’s Friday, and this is my favourite, so pour yourself a glass of something medicinal, we’ve all made it to the end of another week.

Watch the lovely new video from Sea Of Bees for their track Test Yourself, taken from recent album Build A Boat To The Sun.

New Track From Sea Of Bees

Julie Ann Baenziger aka Sea Of Bees will release her new album Build A Boat To The Sun on June 30th.

The record sees her leaving the darkness for brighter horizons, gathering the good things up, leaving the bad behind and moving forward. The music has also moved forward sonically from the previous releases with more tracks having a full band sound after she bought a drum set and spent as much time playing drums as guitar.

The immediate upbeat pop swagger of Test Yourself and alt-rocker Karma Kard set out the sail for this album but there are moments of the folk-pop that brought her initial critical acclaim in Don’t Follow Me and Moline, touches of lush orchestration in Monk and Little Sea.

Stream Dad, the first song to be written for the album, below.

Monday Means Eight of the Best! It has been a while since we’ve had a round-up from round the web and our favourite blogs. These are some of the tunes that have been monopolising the MM stereo recently and should get your week off with a snap, crackle and pop!

We have a new track from The Crocodiles with the snaking, noise-pop of Endless Flowers from forthcoming album of the same name and some more crunchy garage rock from the prolific Fresh & Onlys with new single I Would Not Know The Devil . Third up, is  Sea of Bees quirky folk matched with an other-worldly vocal from her recent album Orangefarben.

We have a new tune, Chasing My Mind, from Swedish garage punks Holograms from their forthcoming self-titled album via Captured Tracks and a huge slab of fuzzed up riffage from Purling Hiss from their recent Shaking Through contribution. There is some swirling, eerie psych-folk from MV & EE in the shape of Sweet Sure Gone from new album Space Homestead and some anthemic indie rock from Fang Island with new track Asunder.

Lastly, we have the excellent new single, The Stars Above Looked So Bright And Green, from Swedish indie-rockers Let’s Say We Did.

What else is there to do on a cold, windswept evening on the eastern streets of Oxford, but to head down to a temporary gig space/arts centre just off the Cowley Road. The Old Bookbinders (not to be mistaken with its namesake over in Jericho) is a bit like gate-crashing a student house party: fairy lights, garlands and bunting, old sofas, chairs, and a smattering of plastic tables. There’s a makeshift bar serving alcohol by night, and tea and coffee by day – and all of this goes hand in hand with tonight’s intimate musical offering, courtesy of Heavenly Recordings.

The evening kicks off with James Walbourne. The man who would be Michael Hutchence – in looks that is – but that’s no reason to hold it against him. James/Michael has an impressive musical CV – Edwyn Collins, Saint Etienne, The Pretenders to name but a few – but he’s got enough pedigree of his own. His debut album, The Hill, was released last month and he certainly has the talent to move up the bill from second support slot. Laconic, country-style music and lyrics to match (including a sudden death in a churchyard), all that was missing was the beards. I really enjoyed the numbers that ratcheted up a gear, washboard in tow, and I’ll be keeping a mackerel ear out in the future.

Next up was Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou, husband and wife folk combo. Pitch perfect, great harmonies, an undoubtedly talented duo but a little too same tempo for my ears. Nice touch from Mr Moss though, managing to play harmonica and guitar simultaneously. From a fish not blessed with amazing co-ordination, I bow to your greater motor skills. I frequently find breathing and walking hard.

So hey, hey, here she comes: Julie Baenziger is Sea of Bees. But don’t be fooled by her kooky banter, for beneath the beatnik looks and slightly off the wall between-song soundbites, beats a heart of intensity and a talent to match. There were moments during her set when I shut my eyes just to focus on her voice. She soars and dips; it’s cut glass, deep ocean and blue sky. Absolutely pure and vulnerable, she really did take my breath away. In fact it was only when I reflected on the evening the next day did I realise just how spell-binding her performance was. I sort of imagine that in a few years time, I might recall a February night at a strange temporary venue in Oxford that was later turned into a block of flats (as is indeed the fate of the Old Bookbinders next month), and recall alchemy at work.

Sea of Bees is pure magic – catch her live if you can, but if not catch a listen/download these including set fave Skinnybone.

Download Outer Minds – Until You’re Dead mp3

Pristine nugget of 60s inspired garage rock, twangy rough-cut harmonies, a perfect hook and wall of sound noise.

Download Secret Colours – In The Absence mp3

Chiming guitars, hypnotic percussion and spaced out vocals.

Download Derek Pritzl – His Words mp3

Unhurried, thoughtful, raggedy old country soul.

Brilliantly discordant, energetic rock ‘n’ roll blast.

Twangy, country infused singalong.

Excellent version of the Low Anthem classic.

Chiming guitar, frantic drumming, great vocals.

Download Glass Owls – Griffin Boy mp3

Well crafted, intelligent indie pop with swaggering attitude and studied nonchalance.

Download The War Crimes – The Cost mp3

An insistent low-key refrain overlaid with lyrics as good, and as dark, as any we’ve heard in 2010.

Hypnotic, wistful and otherwordly. Freak-folk at its finest.

Fingerpicked guitar and sparse percussion soundtrack searingly honest and sometimes uncomfortable folk tale.

Download My Disco – Closer mp3

Dark, pummelling tribal noise with a repetitive intro riff, rumbling drums and sonic interference.

Download Wade Williamson – Uncle Sam Don’t Give No Damn (‘Bout Me) mp3

Foot stomping, anti-war folk protest song, like being in 1968.

Download And The Wires – Lines mp3

The gothic deep South combined with the rhythms of South America, barroom jazz and avant pop.

Download Wayter – Cheese Sandwich mp3

Repetitive, melancholic guitar licks and strained poignant vocals.

Download The Moviegoers – Avalanche mp3

Understated and coolly elegant indie-pop.

Download The Luyas – Tiny Head mp3

Echo-drenched space-age pop song.

Download School of Seven Bells – I L U Mp3

Our favourite track from the electro pysch-popsters album.

And a couple of new ones. We love the ferocious garage jangle of the Jacuzzi Boys and their new single Coral Girls, while the Secret Sisters offer a lovely blend of traditional and timeless harmonious country heartbreak.

Sea of Bees is Julie Baenziger, an utterly spell-binding new talent. Ahead of the release of her debut album Song For The Ravens, released on Heavenly Recordings on February 7, she will be embarking on a tour with the equally ethereal Smoke Fairies, taking in dates across the UK, culminating in a performance at the Scala on February 3rd.

A multi-instrumentalist who possesses a truly unique, lulling warmness to her voice and an honesty in her song-writing which is both heartbreaking and inspirational, her music effortlessly takes on an otherworldly, hypnotic element. Truly magical.

Her debut EP was titled The Woods, and was released October 18th. It is the perfect introduction to Sea Of Bees. In her own words, The Woods is “based upon the hope and the dream of laying with someone you love.” It is hypnotic, wistful and utterly disarming.  B-side Lightfriend, at just 53 seconds, sounds like it was recorded inside of an enchanted music-box, twinkling, delicate and allowing the lulling warmness of Baenziger’s vocals to be brought to the fore.

You can grab it below completely for free, ahead of the new album. Undoubtedly ‘freak-folk’ at its very finest.

Pre-order the album from Rough Trade here. Visit her MySpace here.
