best of the weekHere we are again, but with lighter nights, spring flowers beginning to bloom and eight songs from the past week rounded up for your listening pleasure.

From a new benefit single for the Southern Poverty Law Center, we have wonderfully spectral folk from Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and some equally wonderful psych-folk from a re-issue of a long-lost 70s classic by Philip Lewin. There is a excellent video for Conor Oberst’s muzzy new drinking song and some rousing, full-on punk rock from Whips. We also have Speedy Ortiz’s contribution to the Our First 100 Days project, a blast of classic power-pop from veteran indie royalty Robyn Hitchcock, and classic indie rock from The New Pornographers. Rounding us off is a chugging new Bleached track with some enjoyably hefty power chords.

All yours.

  1. Bonnie “Prince” Billy – Treasure Map
  2. Conor Oberst – Till St. Dymphna Kicks Us Out
  3. The New Pornographers – This Is The World Of The Theater
  4. Whips – Goldmine
  5. Philip Lewin – Watercolours
  6. Speedy Ortiz – In My Way
  7. Robyn Hitchcock – Mad Shelley’s Letterbox
  8. Bleached – Flipside

best of the weekNine songs for your listening pleasure gathered from the week’s new releases.

We have Mountain Goats showing that even with a throwaway song, composed off the back of a jokey Twitter conversation, John Darnielle can better 95% of what is out there, whilst Molly Burch and Tara Jane O’Neil’s beautifully composed songs are at the other end of the pendulum’s swing.

We also have some brilliant fuzzy, indie rock from Snail Mail, Okkervil River’s cover of a Roky Erikson gem especially for Amazon’s Valentines playlist, and another cover (this time it is the Jesus & Mary Chain) from Beach Slang. Some catchy, but caustic punk from Bleached, and some equally catchy garage-punk from The Courtneys. We finish off with a wonderful 60s psych-freak-folk inspired track from Shadow Band.

  1. Snail Mail – Thinning
  2. Okkervil River – You Don’t Love Me Yet  (Roky Erikson cover)
  3. Mountain Goats – The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All The Other Jedi And Eats Their Bones

  5. Bleached – Can You Deal?
  6. Tara Jane O’Neil – Sand
  7. The Courtneys – Minnesota
  8. Beach Slang – Sometimes Always  (Jesus & Mary Chain cover)
  9. Shadow Band – Daylight

Videos of the Day

An eclectic mix of videos for you this morning – we have the fragile, gossamer folk of Sarah Johns Music Party and their video for Green Bud, and the surreal video made by kids for the anarchic Lovely Eggs track I Collect Snails.

We have the uber cool and trippy video for Bleached’s Dead In Your Head and lastly we have a brilliant amination for the heavy-amped, growling roots rock revival of Lincoln Durham’s Ballad Of A Prodigal Son.

Although we now have a regular Video of the Day post on Mad Mackerel, we still can’t keep up with all that we’re being sent and here are a few more of the videos we would like to have featured well before now.

Face-melting UK four piece Trails are making quite a name and quite a noise for themselves. Latest video is for new track Is My Purple Your Purple?, which they are also giving away as a free download.

Download Trails – Is My Purple Your Purple? mp3 (from Is My Purple Your Purple)

Keston Cobblers’ Club release their debut album One, For Words on 27th August. This is the video for For Words, a sweetly harmonious, banjo led folk song. You can also download it below.

Download Keston Cobblers’ Club – For Words mp3 (from One, For Words)

Palpable is the beautiful new single from the folky I Am Oak which is a rich and dynamic taster from forthcoming album Nowhere or Tammensaari. The video is equally easy on the eye.

Fourth generation Albertan rancher and songwriter Corb Lund has just completed a playful video for his new single Gettin’ Down on the Mountain, the first taster from Cabin Fever (out on New West on the 14th August), envisioning an apocalypse coming “when the oil stops, everything stops.”

Here is Bleached playing street session versions of Dazed and Searching Through The Past for They Shoot Music in Barcelona during the Primavera Sound Festival.

South London’s quirky indie-popsters La Shark are currently creating quite a buzz for themselves and new single Mr Modern Man comes with a characteristically wry video.

The debut release from Brooklyn four-piece Fast Years is garage rock and surf pop that feeds the soul. With influences ranging from The Sonics to The Exploding Hearts and The Vaccines, Young Heart is the single taken from their forthcoming debut EP Women.

And while we’re on the topic of garage rock, here is the King Tuff video for Bad Thing.

Download King Tuff – Bad Thing mp3 (from King Tuff)

Call The Doctor are amassing a significant amount of critical praise for their hi-energy pop songs with Sid Vicious attitude. Closer To Home is their latest single.

Singer songwriter David Reynolds moved to Alaska in search of adventure and music. In Ketchikan, he developed his craft as a commercial fisherman by day and musician by night. His third release, the Evergreen EP, dropped on June 4. On Memorial Day, Reynolds released a music video for the first single from the EP, a song dedicated to active duty and veteran troops titled In Full Uniform.

Mind Fish have made a fun video for Can’t Control At All, which, in the words of the band, “It’s about being cool and getting the girl.”

British indie darlings Summer Camp have a new EP called Always due for release next week. This is the title track.

And lastly we have this from Danish artist Emil Friis, it is a little piece of video noir, if you will, and a killer song too!

Seven of the Best: Do Believe The Hype?

Here are a few streams of some of the latest singles and tracks to be creating a buzz round these parts. Worth the hype or not…you decide!

This is Anthem from King Tuff’s self titled album – full-on glam rock revival anyone? Order the record and/or grab yourself a free download of Bad Thing from SubPop here.

This is Husbands by Savages, part of a double A-side single release (along with Flying To Berlin) and from the very first ominous percussion and insistent guitar line you know you are in for a treat. We’re really enjoying this viciously nihilistic tune.

Another all-female band very coolly and confidently mining a rich seam of punked-up garage rock are Pins. This is Shoot You taken from their debut cassette which is now available again after a second run.

Spector have released a new single, Celestine is another catchy indie anthem to follow in the footsteps of Chevy Thunder and Never Fade Away.

Electric Chair by lo-fi slacker Bleached has been around for a while, but is the epitome of subterranean garage punk, all calculated swagger and sneer. This song could almost own its own scuffed leather biker jacket…

Prissy Clerks have a sound that is a bit sweeter, with guitars that jangle more than buzz, and a mellower vocal that gives their track No Sir a 90s indie vibe, but delve beneath the surface and the sound is suffused with reverb and a hitherto unseen heaviness that contrasts perfectly with the poppier upside.

The Dune Rats new single is titled Fuck It, thus guaranteeing them absolutely no radio airplay whatsoever. It sees an official release in July and is every bit as brattish, scuzzy and insolent as you could possibly have hoped for.

Lastly another all-girl group Haim, have built themselves quite a reputation and this track Better Off, from their new EP shows why. In fact you can download the whole EP for free from their website here.

Let's Go Garage. Here are three corking tunes that could all loosely fall under the garage rock banner. Bleached stray into the territory of those classic 60s girl groups with Searching Through The Past while the excellently named Batwings Catwings offer up the explosive Radio. Lastly, Heavy Times live up to their name with a cut from the more visceral end of the garage spectrum with the propulsive percussion, sonic rumble and heavy reverb of Skull Hair.

Get down and groove folks!

Mad Mackerel's Best Of The Month: September 2011. Another bonanza month of top tunes, all rounded up for you in one perfect download mix. Here are the September highlights together, as always, with a couple of top-notch new tracks too.

Download The Migrant – The Hurricane mp3 (from Amerika)

Distinguished by a slow blues refrain, handclaps and a mournful vocal, it is one of those tunes that sounds like it has been around forever.

Download Diarrhea Planet – Warm Ridin’ mp3 (from Loose Jewels)

A magnificent cacophony of guitars, pounding bass, thundering drums and begs for an open road, a booming car stereo and a warm night.

Download Black Pussy – Marijuana mp3 (from On Blonde)

Another track crying out for the open road, beer, and a bag of weed. This one comes barrelling down the road a whoopin’ and a hollerin’, wearing a shit-eatin’ grin and its anthemic heart firmly on its sleeve.

Download Vanish Valley – The Bottom mp3 (from Get Good)

Perfectly blending elements of folk, country and psychedelia into a roll-your-window-down backcountry cruise.

Download Kurt Vile & The Violators – The Creature mp3 (from So Outta Reach EP)

Another cracking slice of woozy, indie rock.

Download Ha Ha Tonka – Made Example Of mp3 (from Death Of A Decade)

Country rock par excellence.

Download Brown Bird – Thunder And Lightning mp3 (from Salt for Salt)

Darkly dramatic folk.

Download Acid Baby Jesus – Oh, Aurelia mp3

Full throttle, scuzzy garage rock.

Download Sic Alps – Breadhead mp3 (from Breadhead 7″)

A lo-fi, garage gem of tambourine, guitar squall and hippy vocals.

Download Icarus Himself – On Your Side mp3 (from Career Culture)

Built on a loop of a drum machine hi-hat and a fuzzed-out Casio synth and recalling artists like Kurt Vile, Deerhunter, and David Bowie.

Download Henry’s Funeral Shoe – Dog Scratched Ear mp3 (from Donkey Jacket)

Raw blues boogie, and song of the month for us!

Download Thee Oh Sees – Carrion Crawler mp3 (from Carrion Crawler / The Dream)

Loose, rattly garage with sneering vocals and a sinewy riff.

Download The Soft Moon – Total Decay mp3 (from Total Decay EP)

Ominous, swirling, bleak and nihilistic.

Download Acid Glasses – My Pale Garden mp3 (from My Pale Garden 7″)

Tripped out psychedelia in an outlandlishly hallucinogenic world.

Download Wooden Wand – Nails And Spikes mp3 (from Archives Vol 3)

Another gem of lo-fi folk genius from the most underrated lyricist around.

Download The Skeleton Dead – Keep Your Eyes To The Ground mp3 (from The Skeleton Dead)

Pure, mesmerising folk melancholia.

Download Woodsman – Specdrum mp3 (from Mystic Places EP)

Another cut of sublime spacey, psychedelia from their forthcoming Mystic Places EP.

Download The Felice Brothers – Behind That Locked Door mp3 (from Mojo Tribute To George Harrison)

The ramshackle Americana of The Felice Brothers take on George Harrison. Win.

Download Real Estate – Green Aisles mp3 (from Days)

Spacious, fluid, psych-tinged pop from the new album.

Download Sick Figures – Whiskey Song mp3 (from Two Ghosts)

Military beat, chaotic sounds and chanted lyrics that calls to mind a nursery rhyme composed by Charles Bukowski at his most pissed (and pissed off).

Download A.A. Bondy – Surfer King mp3 (from Believers)

First cut from folk troubadour’s eagerly awaited new album.

Download Bleached – You Take Time mp3 (from Carter 7″)

Ultra-catchy garage goodness.

And the new ones: we have a taste from Giant Sand’s Chore of Enchantment anniversary reissue in the shape of Music Arcade (which originally appeared on the tour only CD The Rock Opera Years), an epic slice of alternative rock Aussie style from Eddy Current Suppression Ring, a new one from unusual Welsh folkie Cate Le Bon, and punk rock ‘supergroup’ Wild Flag’s single Romance.

Download Giant Sand – Music Arcade mp3 (from Chore Of Enchantment 25th Anniversary Edition)

Download Eddy Current Suppression Ring – Walking In Unison mp3 (from Walking In Unison)

Download Cate Le Bon – Puts Me To Work mp3 (from CYRK)

Download Wild Flag – Romance mp3 (from Romance single)
