More From Widowspeak

Widowspeak will release their new long player Expect The Best later this month, on August 25 via Captured Tracks.

Dabbling in heavier territory than previously, they have shared a second track from it, the balefully distorted When I Tried.

Sonically, Widowspeak exist somewhere in the overlap between sombre indie rock, dream pop, slow-core and their own invented genre, “cowboy grunge”.

New album Expect the Best is the follow up to 2015’s All Yours. While previous albums were conceived as a duo, the new LP finds the band playing to the specific strengths of the current four-piece touring incarnation and exhibits a marked increase in energy.

Their usual palette of dusty guitars and angular twang are still here front and centre, but now with a bit more 90s homage, even if abstractly. The Pacific Northwest influences creep in throughout, as do varying flavours of New York’s legacy, the city the band still partially calls home.

Have a listen to first single Dog, with its self-examination and palpable sense of dread that comes from feeling adrift.

To celebrate the release of their excellent new album All Yours, Widowspeak have shared a cover of 90s rock band Third Eye Blind’s (best) song, How’s It Going To Be.

They’ve taken its inherent melancholy and smothered it in a languid, swirling haze giving it a disconnected dreamlike quality that is hard to resist.

Widowspeak - Calico

We have gradually become more and more enamoured of, and seduced by, the charms of Widowspeak, particularly since the release earlier this year of long player Almanac.

The follow up is a EP titled The Swamps, and having already posted the woozy, narcotic True Believer from it back in July, we now have another taste for you in the shape of the equally good, and equally hazy, Calico. Lovely stuff!

Listen below. The EP is out on Captured Tracks.

Thursday Means Eight of the Best!

A sudden plethora of new tunes have hit the web, and here are eight of our favourites for your aural delight.

First up is psych-heavyweights White Hills persistently hypnotic In Your Room that comes from the space rockers forthoming album So You Are … So You’ll Be, which is out next month on Thrill Jockey. Regina Spektor has an upbeat new song featuring in new Netflix comedy Orange Is The New Black, called You’ve Got Time. Third we have Titus Andronicus and their awesome eight minute cover of Icona Pop’s I Love It, only retitled as I Don’t Care.

Via Brooklyn Vegan, we have Ty Segall’s side project FUZZ who have offered up Loose Sutres – a thrilling slab of slow burning distorted rock ‘n’ roll sleaze from their soon to be released self-titled debut long player. The wonderful Widowspeak have a new single of woozy, narcotic folk that is truly stunning, True Believer comes from their Swamps EP due out in October on Captured Tracks.

Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado is releasing a solo EP titled Law And Order in September, this is Hand In Mine that sounds like it might be an undiscovered gem from Lou Reed’s back catalogue. Next is Owl Paws and their lush, but haunting track Cold Lead Path that is the title track of their upcoming acoustic EP of indie-folk. Lastly we have a track from EONS called Brothers & Sisters which is a wonderfully intimate marriage of fragile folk and sonic exploration. It comes from new album Arctic Radio.

Round Up Time Again.

Time for another trawl through the in-box and round our favourite music sites to bring you a whole host of goodies to enjoy.

First up is a new free song from Bear Driver – layers of sound create a swooning dream pop song of chiming surfed up guitar lines, clattering drums, and melancholic synths. This newly built sound they have dubbed ‘patchwork-pop’!

a

Widowspeak have a new album due via Captured Tracks and Ballad Of The Golden Hour is the first free single – the Mazzy Star style jangle and psych-folk has been given an uneasy twist that makes this a real gem.

a

Guards are due to release their debut LP, In Guards We Trust, in the early part of 2013. Just the riff on new single Coming True means we are looking forward to February already.

a

Melbourne’s Woollen Kits unashamedly immerse themselves in the proto-punk sounds of Detroit and classic garage rock, and new single Be You (taken from album Four Girls) is another top notch example of their prowess in this area.

Download Woollen Kits – Be You mp3 (from Four Girls)

Keeping the garage rock flag flying high are Philadelphia’s The Eeries and their debut full length Home Alone from which Should’ve Stayed Home is a mighty fine example of their seamless and infectious melding of 50s rock’n’roll and 60s pop.

Download The Eeries – Should’ve Stayed Home mp3 (from Home Alone)

Already perfectly described elsewhere as “like Dinosaur Jr. and Guided By Voices in an airplane explosion”, the minimally monikered Dirt have made their first single {Ø} (Empty Sets) available for free (head to their Bandcamp here to pick up the b-side Daggers for free too).

Download Dirt – {Ø} (Empty Sets) mp3 (from {Ø} (Empty Sets) Single)

The Money Go-Round also hail from Down Under, from Sydney to be precise, but their music is anchored in the no-frills swampy, sleazy blues and psychedelia that inspired everyone from The Kinks to the Black Keys. Check the energy and spark of Yayaya.

Our Aussie hat-trick is completed by Adelaide band The Aves. More catchy garage pop in the shape of In Vogue from new EP Anywhere Else.

Download The Aves – In Vogue mp3 (from Anywhere Else EP)

Staying on a theme, The Dead Heads are Australian (of course) but play an eclectc mix of 60s hippie flip to 90s scrungy grunge with a bit of shoegazey pyrotechnics and a dab of drone too. Intrigued? Grab yourself When I’m Dead, the first single from their album Go Ape Shit!.

Download The Dead Heads – When I’m Dead mp3 (from Go Ape Shit!)

Bloomington’s LEGS have a sound that is best described as a distillation of krautrock and post-punk rhythms, new wave synth, garage guitar work, and vocals that fluctuate erratically between a kind of demented 50s rock, post-punk, no wave, and something like a country-and-western lounge croon. They recently issued their first self-titled EP via Bandcamp and this excellent track Voids has more than tickled our eardrums recently.

a

We posted earlier this week about Joshua James as part of our Round Up of some great freebies via Noisetrade et al, and this is the first taste of his long-awaited new album From The Top Of Williamette Mountain.

a

Our latest discovery in one of our favourite genres – spooked out Southern gothic – is Some Dark Holler and their fiery debut Hollow Chest. Combining equal parts Steve Earle, the Civil Wars, and Breaking Bad, straightforward, uncomplicated, and unpolished, these songs resonate like the old Appalachian ballads from which they are clearly inspired. Check out Pills And Kerosene.

a

Portland, Oregon-based post-punk-indie-pop-dande act Pictorials are celebrating the release of their debut EP, Learning, on the band’s own Deja View Records. Inspired by the likes of XTC, the Wake, Felt, and Factory and Creation Records, we have Sense Of Vanity from the EP for your listening pleasure.

Listen below and both tracks can be downloaded for free through Odd Box’s website.

a
