New Album From Zachary Cale

If there is any justice in the musical world, Zachary Cale will soon get the acclaim and the rewards his talents deserve. Amid an overcrowded genre, this singer-songwriter seemingly plucks philosophical tunes of love, longing and heartbreak out of the ether and imbues them with the emotional nuances and lyrical poignancy to create something very special indeed.

This tune, the wonderful Hold Fast comes from his forthcoming fourth long-player Blue Rider which sees a US release on All Hands Electric on 24th September and a little earlier for those of us in Europe, on JellyFant on the 9th September. More minimal than previous offerings, the sparser arrangement and simple, direct melody takes this weary tale to heights that most dream of, but never come close to attaining.

MM's Top Songs Of 2012: Polly Pocket

As well as our Top 100 tunes of the year posts over the past five days, each of the MM contributors have put together their own lists. Kicking us off is Polly Pocket

This has been the hardest year ever to pick the best of – it has been a cracking year for top tunes but here goes…..

30. Sinead O’Connor – The Wolf Is Getting Married

29. Two Gallants – Broken Eyes

28. Tame Impala – Elephant

27. Sera Cahoone – Deer Creek Canyon

18. Shovels & Rope – Birmingham

17. Strand Of Oaks – Little Wishes

16. Ben Howard – Oats In The Water

15. Mumford and Sons – I Will Wait

14. Magic Arm – Put Your Colour Up

13. Trampled By Turtles – Keys To Paradise

12. Field Report – I Am Not Waiting Anymore

11. Grassfight – Nassau

10. Wild Nothing – Paradise
Well, this is way more retro electro pop than I was anticipating having in my top ten, but damn it, I just like it. Whenever I hear it I feel I have gone back about 20 years, sitting round the edge of a village hall hoping not to dance. I never thought it would end up at number ten, but I admire it for doing so.

9. Houndmouth – Penitentiary
Just when I thought I might have found a tune before MM I was of course put right, but I was happy to share my love of Penitentiary nonetheless. Its an old fashioned, whiskey drinking, tobacco chewing kind of a song, and its a song sung well.

8. Angel Snow – Lie Awake
This was a late arrival into my top ten and I am thrilled to have it here. Those beautiful haunting vocals stay with you long after listening – its a sad story perfectly told and I love it. Not the happiest song in my top ten but certainly one of the most beautiful.

7. Tom Williams and The Boat – Too Young
For me, this tune has all the energy of being young with the class of being a little older! I have loved it for months and it does what a good song should – makes you smile, makes you get up and dance or certainly tap a foot. Lovely guitars and violins, with nice gentle vocals – great stuff.

6. The Tallest Man On Earth – Wind And Walls
Why this song? I guess it just makes me happy. When Kristian Matsson starts to sing, its hard not to smile, such a powerful voice. There is no place to hide with this tune – just a guitar, some words and a man telling a story. Nothing wrong with that combination in my mind.

5. First Aid Kit – The Lions Roar
This has been in with the best since the beginning of the year, and rightfully so. Brilliant vocals – all pure and clean and I still marvel at the number of words you can get into one sentence and still sound melodic. Certainly one of the best of the year.

4. Shearwater – You As You Were
I only found Shearwater this year, and what a lovely band to find. Animal Joy is a very fine album and to me, You As You Were is the stand out track. It a massive song, full of energy from start to finish. I kind of wish I’d had this song with me a decade or so ago, it would have suited me down to the ground.

3. Emil Friis – Sand In Your Eyes
A very elegant tune, a quiet beginning and then the dark and brooding piano arrives slowly building before the lyrics kick in. It feels like it should be the soundtrack to a very brilliant film (is it?) Any how, it’s worth several listens, especially with a glass of wine or a cocktail or two.

2. Alt-J – Taro
It was a hard to know which track to pick from (in my humble opinion) the album of the year, An Awesome Wave. In any given situation this song always sounds perfect. I understand none of it but love all of it, particularly the instrumental twiddly middle which always takes me to far away lands, even when stuck on the M4. This song, like much of the album creates something brilliant.

1. We Are Augustines – Chapel Song
This song certainly stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it earlier in the year and continues to do so – always something new to ponder over in those heartbreaking lyrics. Thankfully I am normally left feeling more upbeat than melancholy but its a close call. This has held the no.1 spot for many months now, and rightly so. A song of genius

You can find downloads, streams, or videos for all the other tracks above by checking out MM’s Top 100 tunes here: 100 – 81, 80 – 61, 60 – 41, 40 – 21 and 20 – 1.

Mad Mackerel's Free Mix - Best of June 2012.

Image (c) Big Pic

A cracking month for new releases. Here is the some of the best of our posts from June, together with a couple of newbies for the perfect June mixtape. Check out some of the other ‘Best ofs’ in the sidebar too.

The Hunting Accident – Aubergine
Angular, compulsive, propulsive thump.

Download Damon Moon & The Whispering Drifters – The Fool mp3 (from Lungs, Dirt & Dreams)
Distorted and dishevelled Americana with solitary slow wind and sparse picking.

Download Efren – The Woods And The Wild mp3 (from Write A New Song)
Guitars throw out crunchy muscular riffs, drums pound and gruff vocals spit and snarl over the top of it all – a maelstrom of sonic destruction.

Speedy Ortiz – Silver Spring
Another fine example of their infectious and intelligent songwriting craft, a hook-laden, lyrically sharp slice of twitchy indie rock

Download The Chorderoys – No Prayin Man mp3 (from No Man’s Land)
Twangy, upbeat Country rock with a pounding rhythm and muscular guitar lines.

The Great American Desert – Carson City
Exquisite, compelling songs made for a campfire; made for a backporch and a bottle of whiskey; and made for the long, dark nights when no one but you seems awake in the world.

Ned Collette & Wirewalker – Long You Lie
Mix of experimental pop songwriting, musique concrete and dark folky soundscapes.

Download Edmund II – Golden Lung mp3 (from Floating Monk)
Starts with an orchestral flourish and gently insistent guitar lines, over which warm vocals gracefully swirl and hover to create three minutes of exquisite, honeyed pop music.

Download Deap Vally – Gonna Make My Own Money mp3 (from Gonna Make my Own Money single)
Rock-hard grit and all-girl soul.

Download Magic Trick – Invisible At Midnight mp3 (from Ruler Of The Night)
Poignant, offbeat folk-pop, with an eclectic menagerie of instrumentation.

Download Buffalo Killers – Get It mp3 (from Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.)
Intoxicating mix of ferocious blues psychedelia and good old fashioned rock and roll.

Download K-Holes – Rats mp3 (from Dismania)
Joyful and raucous gutterball punk.

Download Two Gallants – Broken Eyes mp3 (from The Bloom And The Blight)
Lovely slice of indie-folk – one of the songs of the month!

Download Sonnet Cottage – Most Unlikely mp3 (from Another Time)
Pastoral folk charmer, all whimsical mystery.

Download Shovels & Rope – Hollowpoint Blues mp3 (from NoiseTrade Sampler)
Catchy-as-hell junkyard folk-blues. Another contender for song of the month!

Download Rah Rah – Little Poems mp3 (from Little Poems 7″)
Dwells in the heavy complexity of relationships and being “poor, drunk and scared of being alone” told through a poetically skewed lens of life on the road, playing in a band.

Download Salesman – Ella mp3 (from Wasp EP)
Off kilter, somewhat warped take on Americana and desert country folk flavoured with a healthy dollop of psychedelia.

Download Waters – If Only mp3 (from If Only Single)
Another quality slice of psych-pop with added fuzz.

Download Fires – Blackout mp3 (from Echo Sounds EP)
Meaty, angular riffs, occasional discordant tones, and a nihilistic world view.

Download Ivan & Alyosha – All The Times We Had mp3 (from All The Times We Had)
Beautifully simple and melodic and tells a bittersweet tale of goodbye.

Screen Gems – Jazz Records
Just under two minutes of the best, catchiest, woozy, off-kilter, hazy, messed up screwball psych-pop that we’ve heard all year

Download Zachary CaleLove Everlasting mp3 (from Love Everlasting 7″)
Top notch fare from folky singer-songwriter.

Savaging Spires – Tell Me
Fine example of their Wicker-Man style pagan-folk stylings and eerie electronic collages.

Suburban Living – Float In Clouds
Supremely assured mix of lo-fi garage riffs and shimmering dream pop which combine to produce an infectiously catchy summery track.

O’Captain – Eyes Like Anchors
Starts with a sweetly catchy guitar strum and some heartfelt harmonies before throwing off the shackles two thirds of the way through and galloping full pelt to the end of the song.

Coastal – Black Stars / Flash Cars
A deceptively vicious tale referencing Jeremy Kyle, Starbucks and handfuls of pills amongst other things.

Download Daughn Gibson – In The Beginning mp3 (from All Hell)
Could be a classic down-on-their-luck country, could be creepy southern gothic, could be dark folk, but then there are the looped, eerie electronics and over it all is a rich baritone croon every bit the equal of Lee Hazlewood or Nick Cave.

Download Ormonde – Can’t Imagine mp3 (from Machine)
As devastating as it is gentle – warm, organic, glistening in half-light and shadow, slowly revealing highlight after highlight.

Download The Boombox Hearts – 100 (The Latest Flame) mp3 (from 100 (The Latest Flame) single)
Very much pop the 60s way with some noisy indie-style guitars (and yes, the title’s a reference to Elvis!).

And to finish off we have a new track from Tilly And The Wall, the stomping first single from their new album is called Love Riot, some glam tinged rock-pop from Foxygen with Waitin’ 4 U and Total Slacker’s cover of Oblivion by Grimes. Lastly we have the title track from Australian indie-darlings Skipping Girl Vinegar’s Chase The Sun EP, it is hi-fi swagger meets low-fi sway carving out their own heart warming, hobo-pop aesthetic.

Zachary Cale Is Back. A little over a year ago we posted about Louisiana singer-songwriter Zachary Cale.

Back then we said “His voice draws you in, it is inviting and hypnotic and works beautifully with the gentle folk accompaniment as he strums away in true troubadour style. They are reflective, poignant and emotive and he has that rare talent of being able to make you forget what else is going on around you and immerse yourself fully in the world he creates – superb.

The good news then is that he is back with some new music and a trip to these shores to play at the marvellous End of the Road festival as well as a couple of other dates in London at the Wilmington Arms on 30th August and the Brixton Windmill on 9th September.

He has a new single out called Love Everlasting which is part of an ongoing songwriter 7″ series. He told us, “Since it’s a single I thought I’d go for a more dynamic pop sound on this release, with an emphasis on the “rock” in folk rock. I think I must have been jamming a lot of Nick Lowe and Tom Petty records!

It is another superb offering and we’ve had it on repeat since first hearing it. You can download via the soundcloud link and order the 7″ from Dull Knife Records here.

He has also recently taken part in a collaborative recording project with Brooklyn dream folk band Mighty Moon and Ethan Schmid. It was recorded at Black Dirt Studio as part of the house engineers Natch Music series. It features four songs all readily available from the Free Music Archive here.

This is the video for the outstanding Love In Vain from that session.

It is good to have Mr Cale back on the radar, and he’s plenty busy too so lots of good stuff for your ears and eyes – be sure to catch him live when he’s over here.

Brilliant slab of psych infused, rumbling, garage rock.

Sparse, haunting vocals, weary, deadpan and occasionally caustic lyrics, a genuine troubadour’s folk strum and a powerful sense of right and wrong.

Eerie, mesmeric indie rock with spectral loops and electronics.

Download The Great American Canyon Band – A Song For The Rest mp3 (from Wild Heart EP)

Contagious indie folk.

And to round things off we have the first track from An Horse’s forthcoming album Walls titled Trains And Tracks, some brilliant garage punk from Mexico in the shape of Le Butcherettes and the brilliantly intense and menacing Ashley’s Song by Des Ark.

Download Des Ark – Ashley’s Song mp3 (from Don’t Rock The Boat, Sink The Fucker)

Zachary Cale has got in touch a couple of times recently with tracks from a recent 7″ and from his forthcoming album called Noise of Welcome.

Sometimes when you get sent a lot of music stuff can slip through the cracks, it’s not much of an excuse, but it is the truth and such is our excuse where Mr Cale is concerned.

While at first it would seem this is some (albeit rather fine) singer-songwriter material there are soon hints that all is not as straightforward as it seems. There are other forces at work here and they are good ones. His voice draws you in, it is inviting and hypnotic and works beautifully with the gentle folk accompaniment as he strums away in true troubadour style. They are reflective, poignant and emotive and he has that rare talent of being able to make you forget what else is going on around you and immerse yourself fully in the world he creates – superb.

In truth the songs feel like they could have come from any time in the past 40 years, calling to mind Donovan or Dylan as much as they do Nick Drake or vintage Fleetwood Mac, and that my friends is meant simply as a compliment of the highest order.

Oh yes, Zachary Cale may have slipped under our radar once, but we won’t be making that mistake again. Don’t let the same happen to you.

Noise of Welcome is released on 17th May on All Hands Electric. You can pre-order the album and check his back catalogue by clicking here.
