The Low Anthem are a staple favourite here at MM and their stunning performance at last year’s End of the Road Festival to a rapt and enthralled crowd on the lovely Garden Stage will remain one of our favourite live shows ever. This year they have already given us the excellent Smart Flesh (an album that appears amongst our Best of the Year lists in the left column – scroll down!) and now they’re giving away their wonderful 2007 release What The Crow Brings completely free via Noisetrade.
It is a beautifully constructed record of folk and country melodies supported by pump-organ, tongue drum, tube harp, marimba, toy-piano, stand up bass, guitar, harmonica, trumpet and more. Often the songs are stark and mournful. They are always mesmerising, and contain amongst others a cover of the Carter Family’s Keep On The Sunny Side, the melancholic A Weary Horse Can Hide The Pain and live favourite, the achingly gorgeous This God Damn House (still one of the best things they’ve ever done).
Truly this is a record that should be in everyone’s collection. We’ve posted a couple of our favourites below, but if you don’t need any convincing just head over to Noisetrade here and grab the whole record for nothing.
You can buy later albums from Amazon here, or download them here from eMusic.
