Perhaps unusually, this year seemed a better one for albums rather than individual tracks with some fabulous releases over the past twelve months. There were many contenders for our end of year list, but here, after much deliberation, is Part One of our favourites of 2013.

MM's Top Tracks of 2013: 100 - 76

It is that time of year again. The votes have been polled from our MM contributors, the results collated and without further ado, here are Mad Mackerel’s favourite hundred tracks of 2013.

Today, we’re counting down the first twenty five, from 100-76.

100 Woody Pines – Hobo And His Bride
Classic, ramblin’ country blues, where songs are filled with characters fighting to climb up or sliding their way back down – wandering broken hearts, swaggering pimps, crusty hobos – and all inhabiting rundown roadhouses, juke joints and the dusty backroads. Have a listen to the epic tale of young love, The Hobo And His Bride.

.

99 The Dodos – Confidence
Warm and wiry indie rock.

.

98 Blessed Feathers – Real Song For Emily
Fiercer harmonies and a tenser, more urgent feel than this duo usually give us. Despite being only two and a half minutes long, the song’s plaintive coda has a bitter air of finality.

.

97 Bill Callahan – The Sing
Well the only words I said today are “beer” and “thank you” / Beer, thank you / Beer, thank you / Beer

.

96 Best Coast – Fear Of My Own Identity
The best fuzzed up pop single of the year.

.

95 Eula – I Collapse
Seething, fractured, post-punk blues.

Download Eula – I Collapse mp3

.

94 Torres – Honey
A single distorted guitar strum, unsupressed tension, and a raw, slow-burning payoff.

.

93 Mark Mulcahy – Let The Fireflies Fly Away
Penguins, a hitch-hiking chicken, a donkey in a Chevrolet and a monkey family feud.

.

92 Coke Weed – Sunseekers
A woozy, narcoleptic trip through the realms of psychedelia, indie rock and hazy Americana.

.

91 Water Liars – Sucker
The first of three entries from Water Liars. Sucker is the buzzing opener to one of our albums of the year.

.

90 The Oblivians – Run For Cover
Garage punks first album for 16 years didn’t disappoint. Run For Cover was a high octane highlight.

.

89 Grass House – Spinning As We Turn
Cascading guitars and a hypnotic rhythm section that channels the spirits of Joe Meek and the Velvets.

.

88 Ooga Boogas – Sex In The Chillzone
Featuring members of long time faves Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Sex In The Chillzone is an eight minute psych-rock lockdown into the year’s grooviest bass line that sounds like a blend of the Velvet Underground and Parliament.

.

87 Of Montreal – Imbecile Rages
Your folks, they are such lovely people / I can’’t understand where you came from“, one of the best opening couplets of this or any other year.

.

86 The Acquaintances – Paramounts
Tremolo’ed and reverby guitars and echoed out vocals wash over a top-notch rhythm section creating spaced-out garage-influenced rock with a melodic sensibility.

.

85 Dim Peaks – Reason
Laid back, folk infused Americana.

.

84 Colleen Green – Heavy Shit
Totally infectious, stoned punk.

.

83 Shadows At Play – Into The Sun
Upbeat, ethereal folk song that alludes to the Greek mythology story of Icarus, exploring the notion that a man is free once he is defeated.

.

82 Harmed Brothers – Love Song For The Assumed
Mixing folk and bluegrass with a wistful twist of poignant melancholy, Love Song For The Assumed was as sweet and as simple a song of heartbreak and longed for resolution as we heard in the whole year.

.

81 Villagers – Nothing Arrived
I’m loving the piano this year and there’s a good bit of gutsy playing here. What were we hoping to get out of this boys? Nothing actually. People are so bloody disappointing aren’t they? (Mrs M)

.

80 Phox – Noble Heart

.

79 Black Angels – Indigo Meadow
Tribal drumming, 60s Hammer-Horror organ, and reverb.

.

78 The Coathangers – Adderall
A propulsive, jittery, slice of post-punk agitation, borne in on the back of tribal drums and a perfect match for a commonly abused drug used to stimulate the central nervous system!

.

77 Steve Mason – Lot Of Love
Love the piano on this song and the catchy, sing-a-long chorus – a guaranteed earworm if I had any (ears that is… being a fish, of course.) Steve Mason’s gentle vocals reflect on love lost and the hope of finding it again. (Mrs M)

.

76 Jules Larson & AG – Bend Into The Break

Check back tomorrow for tracks 51-75.

Videos of the Day

Start the week in a befitting manner with excellent music videos from the wonderful Dodos (together with the Magik Magik Orchestra), Elephant Stone, Amanda Shires, and the peculiarly named King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard (hazy, stoned psychedelia in case you were wondering…)

New Dodos Track

We loved Confidence, the first track to be released from The Dodos forthcoming long player Carrier.

And now we love Substance, the next track to get an airing from the record. Simple, rousing and lyrically scalpel sharp, it is The Dodos at their dynamic best.

Pre-order the album here.

MM Shorts 374: The Dodos Announce New Album

San Francisco natives, and MM faves, The Dodos have announced the release of their new LP, Carrier, out worldwide on August 27 via Polyvinyl Records.

Listen to the first single, the excellent Confidence below. Pre-order the album here.

Mad Mackerel's Best Of The Month: November 2011. Despite the end of the year fast approaching, thankfully the quality of new music shows no signs of slowing. Here are the best of our November offerings, together with some tasty new tracks to round off the mix.Over thirty great songs – just right for the roaring fire and the cocoa!

Download SiskiyouTwigs And Stones mp3 (from Keep Away The Dead)

Brilliantly judged restless blend of country rock, folk, and grand orchestral rock.

Download The Cloud Nothings – No Future / No Past mp3 (from Attack On Memory)

Intense indie rock – their best yet?

Download The Morning Birds – Born To Be Alive mp3 (from Surrender To This EP)

Skips along on the back of a groove so funky that it sounds like it was kidnapped from a 1970s New York disco and dragged into the new Millennium.

Download A Place To Bury Strangers – So Far Away mp3 (from Onwards To The Wall EP)

This on the other hand is a storming slab of pulverising noisemongering!

Download D.B. Rouse – The Hungover Lowdown Beat Up Burnt Out Blues mp3 (from Repent EP)

Folk yes, but beautifully judged with poignancy and pathos, self-reflection, regrets and dreams.

Download New London Fire – The Dirt The Blood The Faith mp3 (from The Dirt The Blood The Faith)

Sumptuous folk-western that howls its defiance and stands righteous in its anger at injustices suffered.

Download Black Creek – The Mustang mp3 (from Ragged Shark)

Dirty country rock and barrelling bar-room boogie.

Download Wounded Lion – Roman Values mp3 (from IVXLCDM)

Two and a half minutes of insane garage punk that is driven along by a heavyweight riff, pulsating percussion and a classic shouted vocal.

Download The Whalers – Lighthouse mp3 (from Paddle Easy EP)

Hypnotic, surf-inspired indie rock.

Download Lissy Trullie – Madeleine mp3 (from Lissy Trullie)

Slow-burning indie with echoes of the Velvets, even a bit of shoegaze maybe, but all is anchored by a distorted groove and her brilliant voice.

Country jam given a healthy injection of rockabilly rhythm.

Download Monument Valley – Dear John Letters mp3 (from Tongues EP)

Excellent slice of introspective, melancholia from new singer-songwriter.

Download Wooden Wand – Winter In Kentucky mp3 (from Briarwood)

Masterful ramshackle countryish-rock.

Download The Dead Jerichos – Please Yourself mp3 (from Please Yourself EP)

Drenched, droney guitar lines and shattered fragments of disco, punk, and post hardcore rhythms.

Download The Royal Sea – This Summer mp3 (from The Royal Sea)

Surf-drums and sugar coated adrenalin rush – this should have been the woozy, feel good hit of the summer. Our pick of the month.

Download Pontiak – Lions Of Least mp3 (from Echo Ono)

Pulverising psych-rock.

Download Secret Colours – Faust mp3 (from EP3)

Channels the finest of the greats of late ’60s psychedelia, ’90s newgaze reverence, and a touch of driving, bucolic, no frills RnR straight from the greasiest of garages.

Download i am Love – Truest mp3 (from Truest 7″)

Rich, thoughtful folk with beautifully paced ebb and flow.

Download Rob St. John – Sargasso Sea mp3 (from Weald)

Simply stunning excursion into a shifting, twilight world that slowly builds on the back of a sparse, plucked guitar and almost spoken vocals into a swirling, epic peak of rhythmic guitars and cracked vocal harmonies.

And there’s more. To round off the mix we have a gorgeous new one from MM faves, the folky Bowerbirds who will release a new album in March on Dead Oceans, the first taste of individual bubblegum garage from Hunx (as in & His Punx) solo effort appropriately called Hairdresser Blues, the effortlessly sleazy Black Bananas (formerly RTX) and Rad Times from their forthcoming album Rad Times Xpress IV and lastly former Dawes member Alex Casnoff has a new band Harriet and a new EP Tell The Right Story. I Slept With All Your Mothers is the brilliantly named and gripping lead track.

As always…enjoy!

Mad Mackerel's Mega Round Up. Here is another collection of tunes we’ve gathered from our in-box and the internet – we’d like to have more time to do them justice, but nevertheless a cornucopia of pleasures awaits you we promise!

First up is the consistently wonderful Damien Jurado with some authentic, strummed desert blues. Nothing Is The News is the first taste of his forthcoming album Maraqopa.

Download Damien Jurado – Nothing Is The News mp3 (from Maraqopa)

Indie-folksters The Dodos have made a previously unreleased track, So Cold, available.

Download The Dodos – So Cold mp3 (Previously Unreleased)

Of Montreal have also offered up a new track, the seven minute, topically titled Wintered Debts. They have a new album, Paralytic Stalks, due in early 2012.

Download Of Montreal – Wintered Debts mp3

Brown Shoe have been picking up some nice reviews and plaudits for their album The Gift Horse (Bandcamp here) and here is another track to enjoy in the shape of Pauper.

Download Brown Shoe – Pauper mp3 (from The Gift Horse)

Gregory Scott Slay’s posthumous album Horsethief Beats was released a week ago on Communicating Vessels. It is a swirling and mesmerising mix of ambient style folk and Americana with an almost trip-hop undercurrent.

Download Gregory Scott Slay – Kindred Spirit mp3 (from Horsethief Beats)

Download Gregory Scott Slay – Keep It Secret mp3 (from Horsethief Beats)

Galaxy Sunrise are a new name to us, but new offering When Pigs Fly is a lovely excursion into hazy psych-pop that deserves investigating. Check out their Static Moon EP which can be downloaded for free from their Bandcamp page here.

Download Galaxy Sunrise – When Pigs Fly mp3 (from When Pigs Fly single)

Danish band The Boombox Hearts, despite what the name might suggest, offer up a very tasty line in melancholic folk that has drawn comparisons to Mrs M’s fave Mark Lanegan. Crank It Up is a lovely lo-fi example of their wares. Buy their Monte Carlo EP here.

Download The Boombox Hearts – Crank It Up mp3

The Lower 48 release their first full length album, Where All Maps End in the middle of December. The End is the first taste and showcases their warm organic sound and 60s folk influences beautifully without ever being derivative – one to look out for.

Download The Lower 48 – The End mp3 (from Where All Maps End)

We featured Niteflights and their exuberant indie pop back in the summer and they have now turned their hand to a cover of John Cale’s classic Paris 1919. See what you think.

Download Nightflights – Paris 1919 mp3 (John Cale cover)

Electric Flowers are fast gaining a reputation for being louder than My Bloody Valentine. Their self-titled debut EP contains the sonic epic Circles that will resonate long after the last note has faded away.

Download Electric Flowers – Circles mp3 (from Electric Circles EP)

Musically, Whales In Cubicles evoke a huge variety of influences from American greats such as Guided by Voices and Sebadoh, to songwriters such as Neil Young and Stephen Malkmus, all the way through to British heroes Black Sabbath, Blur and Radiohead. Having given away Terror of the Void in the summer they are now releasing a single on the ever reliable Young & Lost Club, who are also offering up Never And Ever as a free download.

Download Whales In Cubicles – Never And Ever mp3

Download Whales In Cubicles – Terror Of The Void mp3

Similarly The Quiet Americans appear to love nothing more than belting out some good old fashioned fuzzed up rock ‘n’ roll and do it extremely well. Their Medicine EP is available for free from their Bandcamp page and contains this noise-pop belter, Be Alone.

Download The Quiet Americans – Be Alone mp3 (from Medicine EP)

Indie psych rockers The Sunbears! released You Will Live Forever yesterday and we have two tracks for you – the infectious Give Love A Try and the more ironic They Think They’re Soooo Philosophical.

Download The Sunbears! – They Think They’re Soooo Philosophical mp3 (from You Will Live Forever)

Kurt von Stetten will release his sixth full-length solo album Cyclops on December 13, on Static Motor Recordings. Effectively using simple song structures and minimal storytelling to create a record of intricate and eclectic garage rock.

Download Kurt von Stetten – Codify mp3 (from Cyclops)

And lastly (for now), we’re loving the catchy folkish strum of Swede Joakim Fritzner’s Thoughts On Us 23-3 from mini album/EP It’s Not Me… which gets a digital release today via Birds Will Sing For You Enterprises. A blend of Nick Drake, Laura Marling and even Peter Gabriel, this one has been on repeat since we first heard it.
