We’ve already shared tracks from Micah P. Hinson’s new album The Holy Strangers, but nothing that compares with this!

Micah Book One, is the centrepiece of the record and at almost 8 minutes long, finds our man reading from the chapter of the same name. A sparse, compelling and sometimes downright uncomfortable tale of gluttony and religion wrapped up in almost apocalyptic despondency.

Listen below and pre-order the album here.

The marvellous Micah P. Hinson has shared new track Oh, Spaceman, taken from his new album Presents The Holy Strangers, out on Full Time Hobby on 8th September. He’ll also be playing a lot of dates in the UK and Ireland in the autumn.

About the song, he says “It was the first song I wrote for my boy, Wiley Tex, after he was born, and the only song I played for about half a year after his birth. It is the only song where the melody and words came before sitting behind a guitar. Which is not a way I’ve ever written.”

Stream it here.

Catch him live:

Micah P. Hinson’s new album Presents The Holy Strangers is described by the artist as being a “modern folk opera”. Telling the story of a war time family, going from birth to love, to marriage and children, to war and betrayal, murder to suicide – spanning all of the strange and glorious places life can lead. We follow their story, we see their decisions, we see their faults and their beauty. We live with them, we die with them.

To be frank it sounds like classic MPH territory and we’re very much looking forward to hearing the record in its hour long entirety when it is released in September. Until then we have two tracks to share from it, the Johnny Cash-style country single Lover’s Lane and The Years Tire On.

Enjoy.

Free End of the Road Festival Mix. Today Barry-Sean and I head off, pop up tents in tow, to the marvellous End of the Road festival in lovely Dorset. Once again sold out, last year’s inaugural trip turned into the best festival visit we’ve ever had, and we’re looking forward to more of the same over the next few days. Even the weather forecast is good!

Once again we have a huge number of superb bands scheduled to play and to follow our free Truck Festival Mix (RiP) and our Wilderness Festival Mix, here’s the third and final instalment – our free End of the Road Festival Mix. Enjoy.

Well, what a week. There really is nowt so funny as folk: if a few more of the adult population learned how to expunge a meaningful mea culpa once in a while, wouldn’t we all rub along a bit better? Is this resistance to accepting responsibility for one’s actions something we learn with age? Vulnerability is not a sign of weakness, nor is making the occasional mess up – but just try owning up. Human beings are fallible: it’s what makes us interesting and beautiful and complex creatures. And in response, you usually find a softening, a deeper connection, and a bit more respect … or even a song!

After all that, the natural choice for me this Friday was none other than Mr Micah P Hinson. Quite well hidden on this side of the water, he’s an interesting character. I saw him play about 18 months ago and although it wasn’t a stand out gig, I do think he has some rather stand out tunes and rather mesmerising stage presence. This was not least because his new and rather lovely wife was on stage with him in a bit of a Linda McCartney role (and that’s meant in a good way!)

Micah Hinson live has an intensity that’s palpable: he sweats and reverbs his way through each song, every sinew of his body is taut with feeling and it’s fascinating to watch. And if you’re an old romantic, which I am, he’s written some of the most poignant love songs, some of which can make me cry and some of which you think, lucky old Mrs Hinson.

It’s hard to pick an absolute, definitive winner, but I’m rather partial to his stuff with the Red Empire Orchestra. He’s also had two albums out in 2010 already – one album of covers (All Dressed Up and Smelling of Strangers) and one of new stuff (…And the Pioneer Saboteurs). All is good stuff.

No-one has to be lonesome tonight.
