MM Shorts 478: Saint Motel

Here is Ace in The Hole, the latest track from bouncy indie rock and popsters Saint Motel.

Videos of the Day

Videos to enjoy today from decker with an appropriately gritty film for the parched, desert folk psychedelia of Shadow Days and from Saint Motel who have an excellent animation to accompany their track Daydream/Wetdream/Nightmare. Electric Shepherd’s psych-blues are showcased to good effect in The Escapist, which tells the story of a woman that cannot be loved, food that cannot be eaten, and a sports car that cannot be kept. Under the ecstatic, delirious cover of night, a man hunts and gets hunted.

From Said The Whale, comes I Love You featuring the band as contestants on an extreme game show, and lastly we have the eerie, feral Red Riding Hood vibe of Future History’s With Haste.

Stream Saint Motel's Debut Album Voyeur.

We’ve posted a couple of times about the inventive and exuberant indie-pop of Saint Motel and yesterday they released their debut long player Voyeur.

Voyeur is an album lush with stories that reveal themselves through thematic twists and turns with a narrative voice both subversive and sincere. With themes ranging from the lure of plastic surgery, to the dangers of honest feedback, to the taboo bonds of friendship within the Heaven’s Gate cult, we end up with tongue-in-cheek notions strung together by honest motifs, delivered with charm, often leaving the song’s meanings open to interpretation.

For your listening pleasure and delectation, we have a full stream of the whole record below. You can also order a copy here.

Thursday Means Six Of The Best!

A few new releases on the radar and well worth some ear-time we think.

We have a new single from Van Pierszalowski aka Waters following on from his excellent debut album Out In The Light last year, If Only is another quality slice of psych-pop with added fuzz.

Download Waters – If Only mp3 (from If Only Single)

After a four year hiatus, Cat Power has a new album, Sun prepped for release. The first taste is an unusually catchy, but typically pithy Ruin.

The always good Adult Swim Single Series has kicked into gear for 2012, with 12 free tracks appearing at the rate of one each week. This summer, they’ll be giving us tracks from people like Wavves and Wye Oak, as well as this the first song of the series, from psych-poppers Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Download The Unknown Mortal Orchestra – I’ll Come Back 4 U mp3 (from Adult Swim Single Series)

The Lighthouse And The Whaler have a new album This Is An Adventure scheduled for release on 18th September. First taste comes in the shape of Venice and most appetising it is too.

Download The Lighthouse And The Whaler – Venice mp3 (from This Is An Adventure)

Amanda Jo Williams released her latest album The Bear Eats Me a couple of days ago. A wholly compelling mix of quirky, idiosyncratic, freak-folk style indie mixed with classic jukebox rockabilly numbers. We have already posted the title track and here is a second taste, the soulful and imaginative Hello Good Morning.

And lastly we have another track from retro-indie popsters Saint Motel’s forthcoming debut release Voyeur (out on 10th July). This is Benny Goodman, a genre-bending homage to the man himself.

MM Shorts 165: New Song From Saint Motel. Saint Motel’s debut album is due out in July and will be called Voyeur. The first taste from it is the sparkling, effervescent indie-pop of 1997 – a vaguely loving ode to the friendships forged in the Heaven’s Gate cult!

Have a listen, or grab it via the limited time download below. Pre-order the album via iTunes here.

MM Shorts 113: More From Saint Motel.

Saint Motel are offering up their new tune Honest Feedback as a limited time free download. They describe it as having “retro sock-hop-pop vibes that we really love and it’s fun to get loose to this song on stage.

Grab it now…while you can! And if you’re going to SxSW make sure to catch them there too.

We’ve been trawling through a whole mass of videos recently and here are some of our favourites assembled for your viewing and listening pleasure.

First up is Crybaby’s video for excellent debut I Cherish The Heartbreak More Than The Love That I Lost, shot in the gloomy surrounds of Bristol hospital and is a noirish loveletter to the exquisite pain of a broken heart.

a

Hotly tipped Essex 4-piece The Milk’s new single Broke Up The Family is a stormer of an anthem.

a

Death Hawk are new to us, and it isn’t the greatest video to be fair, but the pounding psychedelia and Sabbath like riffs of new song Shining has been a real treat and makes it worth sharing.

a

By Contrast, Saint Motel’s At Least I Have Nothing is a introspective work made up of a combination of 16mm, Super 8, Flip-Cam, Video, Cell Phone, and still photography that they’ve accumulated throughout the years. It fits the upbeat nostalgia of the song perfectly.

a

Describing her sound as ‘Doom Soul’, Cold Specks’ music is steeped in the musical traditions of the Deep South. With influences from the Lomax Field Recordings and James Carr to Bill Callahan and Tom Waits, her sparse arrangements and chain gang rhythms stop you dead in your tracks.

a

Hindershot make unusual, complex, catchy indie-pop that calls to mind everything from Soft Cell to T-Rex. The video for Curse Us All is a colourful one of wanton destruction.

a

Brother Gruesome have featured a few times on MM and are established faves of ours. This is the video for the pounding Cut It Out, a song off their cassette tape that was released by Slanty Shanty Records in 2010.  A little late coming, but it is a great song with a cool video featuring street artists from Oklahoma.

a

You & I Belong is the first single from Simone Felice’s debut solo album. Another great song, fun video.

a

Danish sextet Alcoholic Faith Mission has debuted a new video for Running With Insanity from new album Ask Me This. Watch it and download it.

a

a

We take a considerably more rustic turn with Max & The Wild Things video for the excellent Wind Through The Window. Just the feel of a barn-dance stomp and that banjo lead was enough to remind me of the halcyon days of the Cropdusters.

a

Popstrangers hail from New Zealand and make a most edifying racket from a cauldron of grunge, shoegaze, psychedelia and noise pop. The video for What Else Could They Do comes heartily recommended.

a

We’re hoping for big things for Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny this year. This is a live session recording for the new single Sweet Tooth Bird. Like sherbert filled with razor blades.

a

Beirut have just posted a new video for Vagabond from last year’s excellent The Rip Tide.

a

Sweet Lights have this beautifully animated video for Endless Town – the new single out on March 5th via Highline.

a

The Skints are about as close to rap as we get, but this hybrid of rap, ragga, rock and ska beats on Ratatat is undeniably infectious. Like the Selecter crossed with Senser…maybe.

s

Short is sweet, with this 90 second video for Pillow Talk’s rootsy Faux Fur, the lead track from their new EP of the same name.

a

Gently harmonious five-piece Good Dangers feature a stripped back version of their song Abigail, filmed in a skate park. Download the full version too.

And lastly, new MM faves Town Hall have produced their own unique take on Ja Rule & Ashanti’s Always on Time. Watch it and download it.

New Single From Saint Motel. When we last posted about Saint Motel, it was to give you the swaggering indie pop of Puzzle Pieces.

The band describe new track At Least I Have Nothing as a contrast to that last song, being as it is, “a fucked up look at the bright side of utter despair.  When you have nothing, maybe that nothingness is actually something…freedom.

Have a listen.
