Round Up

The new releases juggernaut has well and truly got into gear for 2017 with a whole host of new tracks from some longstanding MM faves seeing the light of day this week.

So, rather than post them all one-by-one, we’ve rounded them up for you into one neat package.

Wonderful New York duo Diet Cig have announced the forthcoming release of their hugely anticipated debut album entitled Swear I’m Good At This. The album will be released on 7th April via Frenchkiss Records. Today the band have shared the first single off the album – the highly infectious Tummy Ache.

Toronto alt-rock quartet The Wooden Sky will also release their new album Swimming in Strange Waters on 7th April via Nevado Music. Drawing its title from a line in Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel, DuneSurvival is the ability to swim in strange water – the record finds frontman and multi-instrumentalist Gavin Gardiner struggling to come to terms with the trauma and unknowns haunting both his personal life and the world at large. Have a listen to the title track.

Churning out hauntingly bittersweet lo-fi, Manchester girlfriend/boyfriend duo Luxury Death are back with their new single Glue, alongside the announcement of their debut EP of the same name.

Laura Marling has shared a second track, Wild Fire, from her upcoming new album Semper Femina.

Laura Marling also contributes backing vocals to Karen Elson’s new track Distant Shore, which comes from the English-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s sophomore album Double Roses – also out on 7th April (mark the date!) via H.O.T Records Ltd.

Long-running Toronto indie-folk trio Rural Alberta Advantage have shared Beacon Hill, it comes ahead of a planned new album for later in the year.

Experimental psych-rock institution Grails have just shared a second track Pelham, ahead of their first studio album in six years, Chalice Hymnal. The track is a visceral collusion of acid-psych, 20th century Western film scores, and jazz-infused prog.

Ignorecam is Pissed Jeans crushing new offering from Why Love Now, their forthcoming fifth album available 24th February on Sub Pop.

And finally, noisy post-punk duo Japandroids have given us No Known Drink Or Drug, a new track from their long awaited third album, Near To The Wild Heart Of Life.

Huge Video Round Up...MM Has Square Eyes!

Videos seem to accumulate in our in-box faster than we have a hope of watching them. However, having sat and watched and watched and watched and then watched some more, this then is our selection of the best we’ve seen.

Wet Nuns are a band we like a lot singing songs as they do about women, death and beer. This is the video for Heavens Below, which will make up one side of an exclusive Record Store Day 7″ release.

a

Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny have been featured on MM a lot this year. Lilliput is a firm Mrs M have and although some jerk keeps taking down the freely available Dodecahedron song, we’re at least able to give you the video for their latest, equally catchy single, Atlas.

a

Equally the marvellous California by Delta Spirit is an enormously popular song in the Mackerel household and this is the video for it.

a

Download Delta Spirit – California mp3 (from Delta Spirit)

Next is Emily Barker and her video for new single The Rains, inspired by Robert Creeley’s poem The Rain, in which small, perceived moments such as a walk in the forest, a bird in flight, rushing water, or a painterly sky inform a remembering of the self: “What am I to myself that must now remain?”.

a

The Wooden Sky have filmed the first of a five part series of haunting, live performances captured at the Grace on the Hill Church in Toronto. This one features the song Bald, Naked and Red. More are now available if you follow the links.

a

Download The Wooden Sky – Malibu Rum mp3 (from Every Child A Daughter, Every Moon A Sun)

Download The Wooden Sky – Child Of The Valley mp3 (from Every Child A Daughter, Every Moon A Sun)

Falling Apple is the first single from Heaven who mix a paisley underground inspired psychedelia with a shoe gaze style noise pop to create something that appears effortlessly cool.

a

Heyward Howkins is equal parts British tweed (Nick Drake, John Cale, The Smiths) and dusty American flannel (Bon Iver, M. Ward, Damien Jurado) and has crafted an album, The Hale & Hearty, with diverse sounds and surprising arrangements that compliment, but never overwhelm, his evocative melodies and lyrics. This is the video for Sugar Sand Stitched Lip.

a

Dinowalrus release a much anticipated new album, Best Behavior, in June featuring guest appearances from Titus Andronicus, and treading somewhere between futurist psychedelia, jangle rock, No Wave, post-punk and even acid house. This is the video for the excellent Phone Home From The Edge.

a

White Hills new video for You Dream You See is a suitably spaced out slab of alien inspired stoner rock from new release Frying On This Rock.

a

Download White Hills – Pads Of Light mp3 (from Frying On This Rock)

And in a somewhat similar vein, The Pharmacy gets stoned and jams out at a river for new video Pines from their Dig Your Grave EP.

a

Download The Pharmacy – Dig Your Grave mp3 (from Dig Your Grave)

We have another exquisite cover from Town Hall for you too. Old Man Duff is a folk tune that the band found on an old 78 RPM record from 1931 by Frankie Marvin.

And lastly we have indie-gloom-pop solo project of Laura Kidd aka She Makes War, her album Little Battles is out April 9th. Driven by her bewitching, pastoral vocals and layered guitars and supported by a plethora of additional instruments from ukulele to autoharp, melodica, piano, violin, harp, saxophone and three part recorder ensemble, her songs are punctuated by a patchwork of field recordings from her global travels. Try Exit Strategy on for size.

Country rocker with a slow-burn intensity that builds in tandem with some expertly judged flourishes of piano and electric guitar.

Download Mirel Wagner – No Death mp3 (from Mirel Wagner)
World-weary, doom-laden, sparse and skeletal. Oh and stunning too.

Download Mark Lanegan – The Gravedigger’s Song (from Funeral Blues)
Brilliant electronica-style drum beat throughout, with the trademark ML growling vocal delivery.

Download Dr. Dog – That Old Black Hole mp3 (from Be The Void)
Classic vintage, ramshackle country rock from excellent new album.

Download Orpheum Bell – Poor Laetitia mp3 (from The Old Sisters’ Home)
Seductive, yet slightly mocking tale of a beautiful, but awkward girl with a haughty tango beat and muted trumpet.

Download Jesse Thomas – Fire mp3 (from War Dancer)
Raw, whiskey soaked folk.

Download The Pharmacy – Dig Your Grave mp3 (from Dig Your Grave)
As good an example of indie-pop-garage bliss as you’ll find.

Download Benjamin Shaw – Kick The Dog mp3 (from The Birds Chirp And The Sun Shines Single)
Idosyncratic, perverse folk ramblings.

Download The Chromatics – Into The Black mp3 (from Kill For Love)
Sublime chilled out cover of Neil Young’s classic.

Download Maps & Atlases – Winter mp3 (from Beware And Be Grateful)
Typically tight and dense, but still catchy indie-pop.

Download Shrouded Strangers – Featherbed mp3 (from Lost Forever)
Skuzzy slacker anthem – a glorious amalgam of surf guitars, krautrock rhythms and fuzzed up hillbilly stomp.

Download Moonface – Teary Eyes And Bloody Lips mp3 (from With Siinai: Heartbreaking Bravery)
A stormer – all buzzing guitars, massive keyboards and nailgun percussion.

Download Cheers Elephant – Doin’ It, Right mp3 (from Like Wind Blows Fire)
A sublime slice of upbeat sunshine pop that morphs into a brief kaleidoscopic freakout before settling back down again.

Download Black Mountain – Mary Lou mp3 (from Year Zero Original Soundtrack)
Almost eight minutes of perfect heavy riffage.

Download Horse Feathers – Fit Against The Country mp3 (from Cynic’s New Year)
Typically rustic folk from one of Portland’s finest.

Download  Guy Capecelatro III – Girlfriends mp3 (from North For The Winter)
Another slice of quirky folk with sly observation and mischievous lyrics.

Download Zulu – Sistine Chapel mp3 (from Wa Of The Zulu)
Clear the cobwebs with this brilliant tribal rumble and punk rock swagger.

Download Teitur – Let The Dog Drive Home mp3 (from Let The Dog Drive Home)
Gently upbeat, elegant, and expansive folk rumination.

Download Wooden Sky – Malibu Rum mp3 (from Every Child A Daughter, Every Moon A Sun)
A beautifully paced folk ballad tinged at the edges with the faint wisp of melancholy – lovely.

Download Damon Moon & The Whispering Drifters – Lungs, Dirt, & Dreams mp3 (from Lungs, Dirt, & Dreams)
A downtempo slow burn of barely picked electric guitar washes over sighed vocals that gradually swell to an appropriately lugubrious and mournful climax.

Download Colleen Green – Worship You mp3 (from Milo Goes To Compton)
Throbbing garagey guitars over a sweetly saccharine vocal.

Download Band In Heaven – Sleazy Dreams mp3 (from Sleazy Dreams 7″)
Visceral, pulsating industrial punk riffing of the very best kind.

Download Drifterswift – Rule Of Twelfths mp3 (from The Rule Of Twelfths EP)
Spacey dream pop, slightly fuzzy and a 100% bona fide ear worm.

Download Ray Wylie Hubbard – Drunken Poet’s Dream mp3 (from Daytrotter Session)
Sublime version of standout track from country outlaw’s last album.

Download The Crocodiles – Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9) mp3 (from Endless Flowers)
Full on, catchy indie rock. Noisy.

Download Coke Weed – Magpie mp3 (from Nice Dreams)
Gently haunting and woozy-at-the-edges folk psychedelia.

Download Ceremony – Adult mp3 (from Zoo)
Loud, fast, uncompromising. This is searing punk rock.

And to finish off we have new tracks from These United States and their rambunctious melting pot of rock-and-roll, folk balladry, and outlaw country that went into taster track Dead And Gone as well as the psych rock influenced indie of Temporary from White Rabbits, one of the best things we’ve heard from them. Exitmusic have a new album scheduled and title track Passage is typically powerful and haunting with layered guitars and drums building to an extraordinary crescendo. Lastly it is the sonic guitar blast of Yellow Orchestra on their outstanding new track The Shakedown.
