New EP from Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences

New EP from Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences We have long been fans of the wilfully idiosyncratic, often downright acidic, and always anti-commercial folk of Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences. They encompass a peculiarly British sense of observational humour, gleefully laced with healthy doses of irony, pathos and sarcasm in equal measure. Over the course of two albums and eight eclectic singles they have provided a wonderful, occasionally bizarre, but always original soundtrack to modern life in the UK.

So we were delighted to discover from our friends at Jezus Factory Records that the band are offering up 5 brand new tracks, titled The Wrong Life EP in a CD digipack for £3.49. Not only that it is released on their own label – the appropriately titled Audio Antihero (specialists in commercial suicide).

As an outfit who’ve previously always drawn comparisons to the likes of The Fall and Nick Cave, this is a very different roadtrip. While the snarling punk and giddily sardonic storytelling remains, The Wrong Life recalls the works of Springsteen (mangled somewhere between Nebraksa and Lucky Town), McLusky with a pokerface, The Idiot era Iggy Pop and (whisper it) even The Eagles.

Listen to a track from the EP here, and visit their label’s Bandcamp page where you can swap your e-mail address for a free track, Gomorrah, from the EP.

You can also buy the EP from Jezus Factory here, and check out their reduced prices on the band’s back catalogue too.

Not only that, the band are playing live, for free, on Sunday at London’s The Drop venue. Offering one of the most unique musical nights our capital city has to give, My So-Called Life bring you another fine Dirty Acoustic set without even bothering your wallet. As well as a headline set from Paul Hawkins & The Awkward Silences you get Adam Donen, J.D.Smith and Martin Aloysius Brignall in support – get more details via Facebook here.

And finally, here’s a couple of older, but still great, tracks from the band too – both from most recent album, Apologies to the Enlightenment.
