We are delighted to bring you the premiere of Skye Steele’s video for his outstanding track Growing Song that comes from his recently released album Up From The Bitterroot.
Written in response to a poem his friend Katie Ludwick, who goes by the artist name Ladypajama, wrote on the impending birth of her son Jorge Danger. The video depicts Ladypajama writing the song on the walls of her art studio accompanied by the now-2-year-old Jorge.
The track slowly unfurls over six and a half minutes, beginning with a single plucked banjo and Steele’s soothing vocals, before rising and falling between the contagious and the affecting – sometimes abuzz with energy and sometimes swirling and subtle. Central to it all is the relationship with the words of the poem – a merging of rhythms and timbres that create a compelling and deeply resonant whole.
Of the song itself Skye says, “The song is all about the ineffable lines of connection that link us together and how they loop back upon themselves, binding us closer. The entire creation of this song and video illustrate the same idea – Ladypajama and I have been friends, mostly communicating via hand-written letters, for twenty years. So for me to write a song after her poem, and then to have her write it out by hand in the video keeps looping that line of connection around and around.”

What a beautiful and thoughtful presentation. I would like to read the poem as text, since my hearing is a bit hard and the video, although it showed much of the lyric in print, sometimes passed a bit too quickly for me to get it all. I believe the lyrics demand and could support some prolonged thought.
Again, this is quite beautiful.
Hi thanks for the comment. We found this version (I’m not sure it is the whole poem as it appears in the video) but it might be worth checking out: http://ladypajama.com/?p=26
