Our friend Scottish Kate is back with a new post and a new discovery.
I’m not big on winsome troubadours. Odds and sods, here and there, mostly, sometimes, but not always, picked up from Mr and Mrs M. But what I like most about music is its ability to surprise, for an artist or track to come out of leftfield and grab you. Which is just what Simon Lynge has done.
First heard in the wee sma hours on Radio 5 live – his singing literally woke me up – and now the album, The Future, has been playing on a loop since arriving last week. Lynge is Greenland’s first international star, I kid you not. His background is fascinating, poignant, intriguing and definitely informs the music. So what’s the hook? The deceptively simple melodies? The lyrics that I wish I could write? The positive, upbeat mood with an undercurrent of dark and melancholy? The big, global sense of identity in some tracks? The haunting voice? All and more. Whatever, it’s grabbed me.
