A bit like desert murder ballads, anything coming into our in-box calling itself ‘voodoo trash blues’ is going to get our attention.
And so it was with The Black Knights, a due hailing from Salford in the north of England who recently released their debut album Sickle Cell Saturday Night. With influences from The Birthday Party to Jon Spencer to The Dead Weather, theirs is a gleeful, fuzzed-up, one-way journey into the heart of darkness.
The album ranges from the Gothic glam of Vampire Rave to the unrelenting sleazy groove of coke addiction in L.A. Hayfever to the apocalyptic fuzz explosion of Saturday Night Succubi. By turns malevolent, ridiculous and outrageous, it is an album for anyone who fancies a good long wallow in the seedier side of life – we’ll see you there!
