Just like MM faves The Howling Owls, The Owsley Brothers hail from Florida. They sent us a couple of tunes from their forthcoming album Separated At Birth, which is out in April.
And what a pair of tunes they were. Under The Shade Of A Live Oak Tree grabbed us by the short and curlies and squeezed from the very first listen. A slow, pulsing blues riff and a plaintive vocal combine perfectly to give us a song so authentic that it sounds like it was made to be sung in the cottonfields and on backwoods porches throughout the South.
Faith In Me is gloomier – sawing, mournful strings providing a fitting backdrop for a pleading, repetitive vocal refrain that drips with desire and desperation in equal measure. Put simply, this is a wonderful slice of sinister gothic country.
We’re looking forward to the album immensely and The Owsley Brothers are (yet another) wonderful discovery in 2011. Highly recommended.
