As anyone with more than a passing acquaintance with this blog will know, we are huge fans of James Jackson Toth, aka Wooden Wand. That is why we were immediate contributors to his recent Kickstarter project to fund latest album Briarwood, recorded with the Briarwood Virgins.
While the album is not getting its official release until 7th November (via the wonderful Fire Records), but we have had a chance to get an advance copy digitally and are happy to report that this is up there with the very best of WW’s output – there are some tracks that simply bring us out in goosebumps. It is a slightly more rock’n’roll record than previous efforts and the backing of a full band gives it a both a casual and loose feel reminiscent of the early 70s and the golden era of country rock – say The Band in their heyday.
Have a listen to the seven minutes of slow burning majesty that is Motel Stationary.
