Phantom Family Halo is the creation of multi-instrumentalist Dominic Cipolla. Their upcoming studio release, When I Fall Out is out on 14th February next year via Knitting Factory Records.
We’ve featured the band before back in May following the release of The Mindeater EP, a split EP featuring them and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and describing their sound as “evil desert psych rock evocative of the chunkiness of Hawkwind and the dark theatricality of Roxy Music“.
Well, we’re pleased to report, on the strength of the pummelling krautrock and raw, glam overtones of advance track White Hot Gun, and a couple of advance listens to the album, that the description still holds true. Cipolla professes a love for influences ranging from Can, John Cale, Amon Duul to Wire and the Plastic Ono Band and the highest compliment we can pay him is that he has delivered a record that is hypnotic, pulsating and captivating and can sit proudly with some of the best releases from all of the above.
When I Fall Out is the first of two Phantom Family Halo albums to be released in 2012 – a “dark” and a “light” album. The songs were all written following the death of Cipolla’s close friend and bandmate who died at age 33. It took Cipolla a year to write the songs that became When I Fall Out and ready himself for the move to Brooklyn, NY, leaving the “darkness” behind.
