Ethiopian born, but raised in Finland, singer-songwriter Mirel Wagner has picked up some very decent reviews recently for the re-issue of last year’s self-titled debut album and mentions of it being world-weary, doom-laden, sparse and skeletal was more than enough for us to check out her Soundcloud page for a listen.
Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
These are desolate, cracked songs of the soul. Songs of tragedy, despair and loneliness and even of necrophilia (but in a loving way you understand). Intimately and unflinchingly told in a way that is as captivating as anything we’ve heard for a long, long while.
“her hair is long
still smells like mud
she answered to my kiss
with a rotten tongue
I move my hips
in her I am home
I’ll keep on loving
till the marrow dries from her bones”
Have a watch of the haunting, harrowing No Death, download it, and listen to a couple more tracks from the album below. Out in the USA on Friendly Fire on March 27th, you can pre-order it here.
