We received an e-mail.
It said, “We are a Portland, Oregon band called Big Haunt. We play spooky, gospel infused big beat indy folk. This is our first single, “Burn Me Up.” It’s a song about ritualistic fire sacrifice and murder. We thought you might like it.”
We did. We liked it very much. It reminds us a little of a previous MM fave, the wonderful Howling Owls, with its sparse, eerie, hypnotic tone and deadpan lyrics.
Big Haunt began in the winter of 2012 when Lars Ballard, Lily Moth and Jeff Evans began playing together in a basement in North Portland. Lars had written a series of songs while living in an apartment above a dive bar in Portland’s Central Eastside Industrial District. The music reflected the desolate, spare architecture of the neighborhood. Working together, Lars, Lily and Jeff turned four of the songs into Big Haunt’s debut EP, Devotionals, to be released this fall.
We’re looking forward to the EP immensely, until then download Burn Me Up for free below.
