Shoegazer country act Hearts of Oak released their third album New England (via Deer Lodge Records) earlier this year. We meant to post about it then, but for some reason it never happened and it is a shame as it really is an album that deserves to be heard.
Fronted by singer-songwriter Nate Wallace, Hearts of Oak has been referred to as “a singer-songwriter with a druggy, psychedelic backing band,” which is more than evident on this release. Delivering a Jason Molina-inspired album, New England is a nine-track collection of songs that owe as much to the Americana forefathers as it does Crazy Horse, Velvet Underground, and even Spiritualized. Breaking free of the standard confines of traditional Alt. Country, New England adds a hazy, acid-laced trip to the songs found within the album.
