New Phosphorescent Live Album

Those who’ve paid more than an occasional visit to MM will know of our love for Matthew Houck’s Phosphorescent, and next month Dead Oceans will release a live triple album taken from their four night residency (including one night solo) at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn in December 2013. Ten hours of music was eventually edited down to 19 tracks covering four Phosphorescent albums, including 2005’s Aw Come Aw Wry, 2007’s Pride, breakout 2010 album Here’s To Taking It Easy, and ultimately, … Continue reading New Phosphorescent Live Album

MM Shorts 648: River Whyless

North Carolina’s River Whyless forthcoming self-titled, five track EP is their first release since their 2012 debut album. Maple Sap is as sweet a sounding song as you could hope to hear, with obvious reference points to traditional British folk, there are also nods to more contemporary bands – a beguiling mix of Sandy Denny, Fairport Convention and the Decemberists perhaps? See what you think… . Continue reading MM Shorts 648: River Whyless

Mad Mackerel Recommends… Small Houses

It has been a couple of years nearly since we featured the softly crafted folk of Small Houses, aka Philadelphia based singer-songwriter Jeremy Quentin. This track, Seventeen In Roselore comes from his upcoming album Still Talk; Second City, it is a bare, wistful song, steeped in poignant nostalgia, lyrically brilliant, and which also features vocals by Samantha Crain. It is well worth a few minutes in the headphones. . Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends… Small Houses

Caitlin Rose – Been Thinkin Bout You All The Time

The marvellous Caitlin Rose (who played one of our favourite sets last time we were at SXSW) has shared a demo of a song called Been Thinkin Bout You All The Time via Soundcloud. It was written with Willie Breeding, from a chorus he had been carrying around for a while, and is just as fine a slice of sweet, melancholy country as you’re likely to … Continue reading Caitlin Rose – Been Thinkin Bout You All The Time

New EP From Lord Buffalo

Just before Christmas we received an e-mail from Lord Buffalo with details of a new four track cassette EP called Castle Tapes. They explained it was a limited release to get a few songs out into the world before heading back into the studio to record a full length album. Amongst them is this folked-out, and truly excellent cover of the Roky Erickson classic Two … Continue reading New EP From Lord Buffalo

New From Nightbeds

It appears Winston Yellen, the creative force behind Nightbeds, has taken a slightly different sonic direction from 2013’s excellent Country Sleep album. The first new track in a good while is Me Liquor And God and emphasises even further the more ambient electronic side that was always present, without sacrificing any of his unique vocal delivery. Intrigued? Have a listen. . Continue reading New From Nightbeds
