MM Shorts 948: Rips

Brooklyn based Rips’ songs may channel late ’70s New York City bands like Television and The Feelies, but they smartly propel these references into something new and contemporary. Their self-titled debut, produced by Austin Brown of Parquet Courts, is eleven tracks of buzzing guitar riffs driven by a charged rhythm section. Check out the chugging fizz of new single Delay and the previously shared, slightly more reflective Malibu … Continue reading MM Shorts 948: Rips

EAT FAST – Immortal Kombat EP

Newcastle’s EAT FAST will release their second EP, Immortal Kombat, on 19 May via Brighton indie Cannibal Hymns. The title track from the record is out today and we’re liking it a lot. A rasping gut-punch of battering riffs and typically dagger-like lyricism. The track weighs up the pros and cons of lead singer Adam Pearson finding happiness in solitude – before being “chinned in a pub by an observer’s … Continue reading EAT FAST – Immortal Kombat EP

Mad Mackerel Recommends… Strange Cages

With their frenetic, snotty, psych-surf rock ‘n’ roll sound in the vein of Ty Segall or The Cramps, Brighton’s Strange Cages have made big strides in their short existence. We featured them back in 2015, and now the trio are now set to release a new 6-track EP The Cracks on Vallence Records this June. First track to surface is Leader Of A Cult combining elements of krautrock and … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends… Strange Cages

MM Shorts 943: Piss Test

Piss Test are a brilliantly named punk threesome formed in Portland, Oregon in 2012. LPII is (unsurprisingly) their second album, and consists of eleven tracks of snotty, sneering, garage-punk crammed into 19 minutes and 22 seconds. The shortest at 57 seconds, the longest a second over two minutes. Listen to ferocious album opener Marianne and ferocious album closer Whole Lot Of Whole Lotta Rosie. You’ll … Continue reading MM Shorts 943: Piss Test

MM Shorts 939: Chemtrails

London quintet Chemtrails have shared the third and final single from their upcoming second EP Headless Pin Up Girl.  Forever Watching The Skies is a gem of hazy, hypnotic indie-psych that adds a contemporary twist to the halcyon days of bands like The Jesus & Mary Chain and Primal Scream. Listen below and buy the EP via Bandcamp here.   Continue reading MM Shorts 939: Chemtrails
