Mirror Traffic is the forthcoming album from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks. We’re enjoying the taster track’s refrain about Senators and blow jobs and it is all delivered in the classic, slighty messy, indie rock style that Malkmus is a past master of – dare we mention Pavement here…I think so. The album is released via Matador in the USA and over here, through Domino. … Continue reading New from Stephen Malkmus
Next week Vetiver release their fifth album, The Errant Charm, on Sub Pop Records. We first became aware of them after hearing a copy of Thing Of The Past, their album of twelve beautifully done cover songs. Since then we’ve gobbled up everything by them that has come our way and 2009’s Tight Knit album was a particular favourite of that year. Straddling gentle sunshine … Continue reading New Album from Vetiver
Buffalo Killers are an American rock band comprising brothers Zachary and Andrew Gabbard with Joseph Sebaali. Quickly signed to Alive Records after sending a burnt CD with just their telephone number and name on it, their self-titled debut album was released in October of 2006 followed by Let It Ride, produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Most recently, the Buffalo Killers collaborated with Kelley Deal … Continue reading New Album from the Buffalo Killers
It’s that time again. The Insound monthly free digital mix is one of our favourites and we almost always discover a new gem or two within the fifteen or so songs they put out. As usual it is there for a week only so click here to get the whole thing or check out a couple of our favorites from this month, another track from … Continue reading Insound Free Digital Mix: June
On my regular pilgrimage back from the south east coast yesterday I was quite taken with this track, Hearts, from I Break Horses that was played by Marc Riley on 6 Music last night. The band are a recent signing to Bella Union and are a Swedish husband and wife duo, and while the shoegaze influences (MBV, Ride, J&MC et al) are clear, the gorgeous … Continue reading Introducing…I Break Horses
For anyone who didn’t pick this up from the ever reliable Stereogum, this is an absolute gem of a track – truly as good as the band’s name is bad. Bobby (what?) are an indie band from Massachusetts and will release their self-titled debut on 21st June. Taster track, Ginger (Water Birth) features Mountain Man’s Molly Sarle and is a gorgeous exercise in musicianship. The … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…Bobby
The Lucid Dream released their new single Love In My Veins on the 30th May so we’re about a week late on this one. No matter, because it is an absolute stormer of a track. From the off, it displays guitar riffs soaked in psychedelic blues with pounding drum rolls and reverb drenched vocals. The track builds and picks up tempo with crashing cymbals and the … Continue reading New Single from The Lucid Dream
Lauren Shera is a singer-songwriter who releases her album Once I Was A Bird tomorrow on Such Small Hands Music. It is the follow-up to her 2006 digital only debut In My Bones. While it may seem a long gap between records, she is still tender in years. However, her music has a wonderfully poignant quality that makes you think she should be a lot … Continue reading Introducing…Lauren Shera
Tomorrow, June 7th, sees the release of Larceny & Old Lace, the new album by The Coathangers. It is their third full length record and sees the scrappy, devil-may-care anarchy of their earlier releases tightened up a smidgeon and the repertoire expanded a little sonically. The outcome is still full-on garage rock, but this time there are some twists with the thrash and while the … Continue reading The Coathangers – Larceny & Old Lace Album
Little Horn began when Atlanta musician Keith Forrester wrote some songs about, as per usual, hard stuff he was going through. Being shy and reclusive about singing, it wasn’t until a group picking session in Alabama where he was asked to sing a folk song that everyone else had forgotten the words to that his friend Daniel Bellury noticed his potential. After that fateful day, … Continue reading Introducing…Little Horn
