We have been long standing admirers of the sibling duo Brad and Jessica Lauretti who have released a couple of albums and toured pretty relentlessly as This Frontier Needs Heroes. They have a new album due in late August, Hooky benefits from the clever use of additional band members to bring an added dimension to their already sweetly rich harmonies. The taster track is the intriguingly … Continue reading New Album From This Frontier Needs Heroes
Videos this morning from Low for Plastic Cup (one of our favourite songs of the year so far), and from ‘slowcore’ to the sonic mayhem of Destruction Unit and their video for Sonic Pearl. We also have intelligent, sophisticated indie-pop from Big Scary and their video for Luck Now. Finally in Guanajuato, Mexico, nine girls bail out of two 4x4s and immediately start their freaky dancing … Continue reading Videos of the Day: Low || Destruction Unit || Big Scary || Hooded Fang
What a treat to have the anthemic, high powered punk riffing of No Age back on the scene. This is C’mon Stimmung, a first taste from new album, An Object, out via Sub Pop in August. Have no fear, it doesn’t disappoint! . Continue reading MM Shorts 390: No Age Are Back
Here are eight of the very best tracks to reach out to us from our inbox and the internet over the past few days. First up we have a new track from the forthcoming album Soft Will from Smith Westerns, which distills the spirit of Big Star into a delicately reverential tribute to classic 70s radio rock. We have the superbly maudlin, gloom-pop of Franklin the … Continue reading Thursday Means Eight Of The Best
Black Joe Lewis have announced details of their brand new full-length LP, Electric Slave, to be released on August 27 on Vagrant Records. The first taste is the excellently named Skulldiggin, which grips from the off with a blistering, distorted blues riff of righteous fury and a gruff vocal of just the right amount of hellfire and brimstone zeal to match. Welcome back boys! Continue reading New Album From Black Joe Lewis
Garage noiseniks Speedy Ortiz have featured a number of times on Mad Mackerel and it is fair to say we are very much looking forward to their debut long player Major Arcana, which is out in less than a month on Carpark Records. No Below is the second single to be taken from it and offers more than enough to whet the appetite for the … Continue reading New Single From Speedy Ortiz
. Taken from their eagerly anticipated debut album (set for release in the autumn), here is the thumping first single from Whales In Cubicles. Disappear is a song about the fragility and fleeting nature of identity. Set against a riotous backdrop of Smashing Pumpkins-esque guitars and driving drums, it is certainly a pretty big statement of sonic intent from the band. Continue reading MM Shorts 389: Whales In Cubicles New Single
Enjoy a dreamworld populated with magical jellyfish from Dungeonesse in their video for Nightlight, a no frills live performance from Young Aviators and their anthemic Forward Thinking and lastly watch everything go wrong for an inappropriate Mickey Mouse in the Naive New Beaters film for the rocking Shit Happens.. . . Continue reading Videos of the Day: Dungeonesse || Young Aviators || Naive New Beaters
We were pretty taken with our discovery of Algernon Doll’s debut long player, Camomile, last year. It was a record of uniquely off-kilter folk, and an often painfully raw and dark exploration of his struggles with extreme anxiety and bipolar disorder. Now he is back with a follow-up in the shape of Citalo-pop, which is out now via Common Records. Taster track Anti-them indicates that this … Continue reading New Album From Algernon Doll
On 23rd July, Hardly Art will release the new full-length by California’s Hunx & His Punx. Street Punk, as the title implies, is a dramatic departure from the band’s previous outing, 2011’s Too Young to Be in Love, and includes a deep-cut Beastie Boys cover, Egg Raid on Mojo, and brief, blistering anthems like (the possibly self-explanatory) Everyone’s a Pussy (Fuck You Dude). In fact, it … Continue reading Hunx & His Punx New Album: Street Punk
