Town Hall are our favourite discovery of 2012 so far. Here is a hitherto unreleased video of them covering Jimmy Eat World’s power-pop breakthrough The Middle. We are thoroughly enjoying the uptempo blend of indie rock and folk that is the domain of the Bonesetters. Debut album Savages was finally released last month after being much delayed following the demise of previous label Mossback Records. A successful Kickstarter campaign meant it finally saw the light of day albeit a few months late. The wait appears very much worth it though on … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…Bonesetters
On February 7th, Kansas City’s Capybara will release their sophomore album, Dave Drusky on The Record Machine. They have a warm, organic sound that manages to be both simple and catchy. The ethereal standout, Neighbor Crimes hovers like a cloudy summer sky, on the verge of ripping open and washing the misery away. Grab it below together with the opening track from the album Late Night Bikes. Download … Continue reading MM Shorts 81: Capybara
The Slytest, consisting of young Swedes Dan Axelsson and Simon Larsson profess to have had a fascination for American music pretty much since birth. On this, their first EP they let this fascination take a couple of different shapes – from the Tom Petty sounding guitars of Who You Are to the Ryan Adams style duet Where Did You Go To Sleep Last Night?. The band also … Continue reading Introducing…The Slytest
The day after Christmas we posted about the soaring, infectious psych-pop of Wowser Browser and gave you a couple of very well received tasters from their imminent self-titled debut album. Next Tuesday – January 24th – is the official release date for the record and since the release is only one week away, Adair Park is releasing E Dialeda Ho from this album to further … Continue reading More From Wowser Browser
Toy have been generating some serious column inches, and much love from Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, recently for their take on krautrock rhythms melded with buzzing indie guitars and a vocal that recalls the halycon days of British indie rock. Grab yourself the rather marvellous sub-eight minutes romp of single Left Myself Behind. Download Toy – Left Myself Behind mp3 (from Left Myself … Continue reading MM Shorts 80: Toy
We have been fans of Damon Moon & The Whispering Drifters and their bold, experimental take on Americana for a while now. So it was good to discover the band’s second LP entitled Lungs, Dirt, & Dreams (which was recorded in a cabin on a mountain near Tiger, GA.) will be released on February 21st via Adair Park Recordings. Moon says of the record, “The whole idea of … Continue reading New From Damon Moon & The Whispering Drifters
MM and I went to see a film this week with a friend of ours, Gooner Ian. We were the only three in the cinema until the last minute when a couple gate-crashed the party. (Didn’t they realise?! We didn’t!) Anyway, no-one could deny the commanding central performance or even a highly credible supporting cast, but it just wasn’t what it promised to be. It … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (20th January)
Thoroughly enjoying the pulsating psych-rock groove and foot stomping rhythm of Green City. A taste from the debut album Ripe Fruit, coming from oddly named 5-piece band Stephen Paul Smoker. Can’t wait, but ’til then download this! Download Stephen Paul Smoker – Green City mp3 (from Ripe Fruit) Continue reading MM Shorts 79: Stephen Paul Smoker
We’re thoroughly enjoying this from Brooklyn four-piece Fast Years who formed as recently as the Spring of 2011. The band plays a mix of 80s Punk, surf pop, and classic garage, with influences ranging from The Sonics to The Exploding Hearts. They’ve had an online presence for all of 15 days now, including a free giveaway of lead track Young Heart, but their impact has … Continue reading MM Shorts 78: Fast Years
