Tuesday Means Eight of the Best!

Its been a good while since we’ve put up one of these type of posts, but a plethora of top notch releases meant it demanded to be temporarily resurrected!

So without further ado we have another taste of Laura Marling’s much anticipated new album in the shape of Once, and another taste from the rather weirder folk songstress Amanda Jo Williams and Holster, The Gun It Hangs In There, which is taken from her new album You’re The Father Of My Songs.

Cass McCombs will release a split single with Michael Hurley in the summer and his offering is the cheery shuffle of Three Men Sitting On A Hollow Log. Elsewhere, New Zealand band Surf City’s forthcoming album We Knew It Was Not Going To Be Like This continues their love affair with psychedelic, reverb-swathed guitar pop, drawing from their Flying Nun forefathers The Clean and The Chills, as well as the fuzzed-up dream pop of The Jesus and Mary Chain and the loopy noise of Animal Collective. Have a listen to It’s A Common Life.

Brendan Benson has a new single out titled Swallow You Whole, which is an infectiously jaunty piano led slice of indie rock and by contrast a slow burning, semi-intimidating cover of TLC’s  No Scrubs by Scout Niblett is a gem right out of left field – it comes from her critically acclaimed new album It’s Up To Emma.

Next, turn up the volume for another taste of White Mystery’s high octane garage-punk blues with their new single Telepathic from recent album of the same name, and finally we have the insouciant indie of Smith Westerns new single 3AM Spiritual which comes with a free, lightly sprinkled tinge of 60s psychedelia.

Mad Mackerel's Best of April 2013

Better late than never, here is our monthly round-up of the best of our April downloads together with a handful of brand new tracks. More than twenty songs especially prepared for you to put together an eclectic and appealing mix to impress all your friends and bore your boring work colleagues.

Wild Wild Wets – Criminal Blue
Tripped out, freaked out, psych pop.

Hey Anna – Tiny Kiss
Intimate vocal harmonies perched atop poppy folkish melodies that meet soaring, atmospheric alt-rock.

The Lost Souls Club – Son, You Look Like You Need Jesus
Taking its cue from the darker end of the psych-blues spectrum, this track gleefully careers off the road into the verge, happily making a home in the margins of mainstream rock’n’roll and spitting sly malevolence at anyone who comes too close.

Owls Of The Swamp – Hypnotist
A masterpiece of elegiac fingerpicked folk, softly spun melody, and ghostly backing vocals.

Young Hunting – Baby’s First Steps
Lush, woozy and seductive evoking a sense of back porch bonhomie and marijuana enhanced well being.

Belle Mare – The Boat Of The Fragile Mind
Dreamspace of acoustic and synth textures, weaving folk with dream pop.

Sunjacket – Alligator
Indie rock with a laconic, hazy chug and sweet falsetto chorus.

Download Brass Bed – Please Don’t Go mp3 (from The Secret Will Keep You)
Three minutes of infectious indie-rock perfection with a soupçon of garage rock attitude.

Amanda Jo Williams – 2000Hell
Idiosyncratic mix of twangy rockabilly and weird Americana

The Baptist Generals – Broken Glass
Haunted, claustrophobic take on drunken folk.

Click through for free download.

Torches – When You Gonna?
Opens with a tasty riff and settles into a nice, easy-going melodic groove that calls to mind The Shins or Spoon.

Georgia’s Horse – Ginger
Dusty Americana shot through with a melancholy and sadness that is almost real enough to touch.

Paperhaus – Helicopters
Perfectly judged psych-pop.

Shawn Mrazek Lives! – Man In The Grass
A tale of self-discovery and freedom that snaps, snarls and sparkles in equal measure.

Download Shannon and the Clams – Into a Dream mp3 (from Dreams in the Rat House)
Slow-dance-ready instrumental with darkly bucolic lyrics.

The Builders & The Butchers – Dirt In The Ground
Sonically heavier perhaps, but just as distinctive dark-hearted folk as always. Wonderful.

And new tracks to dive into from Morningbell’s experimental psych-tinged art rock to Honeymilk’s infectious indie, and two tracks of gorgeous stripped back folk from Dark For Dark. Finally, try the simplicity and honesty from Young Readers indie-folk, shot through with a dreamy, imaginary quality that (whisper it) calls to mind Sparklehorse or Jason Molina.

Amanda Jo Williams New Album

Last year, we were gradually seduced by Amanda Jo Williams last album The Bear Eats Me (see our post here), which went on to become a real favourite. In particular the epic closing track Sick And Dying is still getting regular spins in various playlists here.

So, good news then that her fourth album You’re The Father Of My Songs will see a release on the 21st May. As ever her idiosyncratic mix of twangy rockabilly and weird Americana are mixed in perfect quantities to deliver her unique world view in the most delightfully and beguiling way.

Quirky and off-kilter are much overused terms to describe anything slightly out of the ordinary, but not for Amanda Jo Williams, You’re The Father Of My Songs is more the latter than the former, ranging from psychedelic seasick shanties to country gospel and straight-up unashamed pop. But, lurking beneath the surface, is something altogether a bit more dangerous that every so often snaps and snarls and never lets the listener settle into any type of comfort zone and that, you suspect, is just how she likes it.

Dive into the impending brimstone of album opener 2000Hell, and mark the album release date in your diary…

Thursday Means Six Of The Best!

A few new releases on the radar and well worth some ear-time we think.

The always good Adult Swim Single Series has kicked into gear for 2012, with 12 free tracks appearing at the rate of one each week. This summer, they’ll be giving us tracks from people like Wavves and Wye Oak, as well as this the first song of the series, from psych-poppers Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Download The Unknown Mortal Orchestra – I’ll Come Back 4 U mp3 (from Adult Swim Single Series)

The Lighthouse And The Whaler have a new album This Is An Adventure scheduled for release on 18th September. First taste comes in the shape of Venice and most appetising it is too.

Download The Lighthouse And The Whaler – Venice mp3 (from This Is An Adventure)

Amanda Jo Williams released her latest album The Bear Eats Me a couple of days ago. A wholly compelling mix of quirky, idiosyncratic, freak-folk style indie mixed with classic jukebox rockabilly numbers. We have already posted the title track and here is a second taste, the soulful and imaginative Hello Good Morning.

Download Amanda Jo Williams – Hello Good Morning mp3 (from The Bear Eats Me)

And lastly we have another track from retro-indie popsters Saint Motel’s forthcoming debut release Voyeur (out on 10th July). This is Benny Goodman, a genre-bending homage to the man himself.

Minimalist string arrangements with electronic manipulations and drones to produce a doom chamber-pop song.

Robust, but still melodic indie rock with some folky undertones.

Sounding like a blend of Tom Waits and Beck, this is a peculiar brand of art-rock that defies definition.

Download MV & EEToo Far To See mp3 (from Space Homestead)
Off-kilter Americana. Plaintive, almost elegiac and builds up to some guitar histrionics than recall Neil Young in a most pleasing way.

High octane garage punk, thump and clatter.

Download The Plastic Pals – Leave It Til Tomorrow (from Leave it ‘Til Tomorrow Digital Single)

Mad Mackerel Recommends...Amanda Jo Williams.

Amanda Jo Williams latest offering, The Bear Eats Me, is chock full of catchy rockabilly band numbers, with multi-layered recordings featuring cherubic choruses and good ol’ honky tonk. It’s dusty jukebox rock that will wake the kids in the middle of the night for a boot-stomping, moon-invoking dance party on the back porch.

Comparisons? Try Hank Williams Jr., Joanna Newsome, Melanie or June CarterLucinda Williams as well. But that’s not all, there is a surreal taste to the album, something quirky and off-kilter. Add Devendra Banhart to the list and you’ll be getting somewhere in the vast musical playground that Amanda Jo Williams inhabits.

The Bear Eats Me is released on Neurotic Yell Records, June 19th. Grab the title track now.
