New Single From Big Harp

Posted: March 24, 2015 in Folk, Indie, Music, Pop, Psychedelic, Rock

Husband and wife indie-popsters Big Harp will release the follow up to 2013’s excellent Chain Letters album later this year.

The first single from it is the recently released, and fuzzily infectious, It’s a Shame, which adds some ‘60s psych and a bit of ‘80s flamboyant pop to their established ingredients, creating a vibrant new sound that is exemplified in this instant bittersweet, power-pop classic.

Groove around the living room to this one…

Mad Mackerel's Best Of The Month: January 2013

So, all things considered January got off to a rip-roaring start where new tunes are concerned. Here is our selection of our best of the month’s downloads (27 in all) and a few new tunes too – more than 30 to pick from, so blow those January blues away with these babies.

Prissy Clerks – Bruise or Be Bruised
Mix of fuzzed up punk and slacker indie with garage pop undertones managing to balance a confused, dark isolation with some tender sweetness.

Download The Chaw – The Whole Night Through mp3 (from The Chaw)
Propulsive rhythms and guitar squalls drenched in reverb, referencing soundtracks of the classic spaghetti westerns, big open bar chords and barky low register guitar leads ala Dick Dale.

Download Water Liars – Fake Heat mp3 (from Wyoming)
Plaintive vocals building over the slowly increasing guitar distortion creates a real treat of a first taste from forthcoming album.

Big Harp – Waiting For Some Drunk
Literate Americana, with fuzzed-out, needle-sharp textures.

Download Indian Wars – Sweetheart Of The North mp3 (from Songs From The North)
First taste of new album is a cracker from countrified rockers.

Download Airstrip – Pleasure Center mp3 (from Willing)
Hypnotic and dark “nightmare pop”

Download Colleen Green – Time In The World mp3 (from Sock it to Me)
Showcases vintage synth tones alongside Green’s trademark multi-tracked harmonies, deep-fried guitar chords, and spartan drum machine beats.

Download Milo Greene – Parents mp3 (from Filter Presents: Milo Turns 50)
Eerily hushed and woozy version of the scathing 1982 classic Descendents track Parents. Cover of the month undoubtedly.

Lower Plenty – Strange Beast
Hazy, beautifully melancholy, suburban-country music. Click through to download for free.

Download Tom Morgan – Taste For Blood mp3 (from Orange Syringe)
Stripped back and laconic folk laced with self effacing black humour.

Download Swallows – The Winnowing mp3 (from Witching & Divining)
Rasping, gravelly vocals, sombre cello and chanted junkyard chorus call to mind Tom Waits and The Wicker Man in equal measure.

Wooden Wand – Outsider Blues
No description needed – best album of the month. Mellow, oak-aged, yet still oddly warped folk. Brilliant.

Download Summer Aviation – Love So Fine mp3 (from Love So Fine single)
Combine the fresh, supercharged sound of 60s pop arrangements with post-punk avant-garde: Think Burt Bacharach meets My Bloody Valentine.

Honeyslide – Sugar Routine
Warm distorted guitars, complex hooks and captivating melodies swathed in reverb to create piercing sonic landscapes.

PRAVADA – Campfire Song
Catchy-as-hell tune filled with swirling guitars and sugary indie pop harmonies.

Download Frontier Ruckus – Dealerships mp3 (from Eternity of Dimming)
Wonderfully folky Americana from much anticipated new album.

Harry George Johns – Hospital Blues
Raw personal folk, an incredibly personal diary of a dark and desperate time.

Download Cobalt Cranes – Head In The Clouds mp3 (from Head In The Clouds)
Blend elements of desert, psychedelic and shoegaze sounds, taking a modern approach to classic California rock.

Download The Lovely Bad Things – Fried Eggs mp3 (from The Late Great Whatever)
Garage-punk masterclass.

Download Torres – Mother Earth, Father God mp3 (from Torres)
Minimal, ragged, and raw folk from singer-songwriter’s debut release.

As Elephants Are – Lucifer
Another blistering slice of epic, widescreen indie rock.

Download Fletcher C Johnson – Happy Birthday mp3 (from Salutations)
A nostalgic paean to the 60s with a sweet melody and chorus. Perfect garage pop.

Download The Futurebirds – Man With No Knees (demo) mp3 (from Exhume)
Brilliantly ramshackle Americana and pedal-steel inspired psychedelia.

Download Little Wings – Sandy Babe mp3 (from LAST)
Little Wings at their warmest and most mellow.

Pickering Pick – Standing Stone
Warm, sensitive, thoughtful and restrained – perfect fare from singer-songwriter par-excellence.

Download Lazy Talkers – Killing Time mp3 (from Lazy Talkers)
Sweet, easy-going jangle from indie-folksters.

Jack James – Three Names
Brooding slice of dark folk (click through to download for free).

And to finish off, new tunes from Screaming Females with the sinewy and rickety Poison Arrow from their forthcoming tape release Chalk Tape, a second (brilliant) track from John Grant’s much anticipated new record Pale Green Ghosts, the excellent literate Americana tinged indie of Yellow Red Sparks and the song that gave them their name, and finally the mesmerising brilliance of Secret Mountains and their haunting track Coasting.

Grab it below. Pre-order the album here.

Mad Mackerel's Best of November 2012

Even though Christmas is looming and the deluge of end-of-year best of lists are starting to appear on the horizon, November still gave us plenty of cracking new tunes to enjoy. Here are our pick of the best of the downloads from November’s posts, together with a few newbies to tickle the earbuds too. Dive in.

Download Crushed Out – Push Down & Twist mp3 (from Want To Give)
Primal surf-garage rock’n’roll.

Download Split Screens – Born mp3 (from Split Screens EP)
Subtle psychedelia with an expansive feel, dense layers and dream-like croon.

Download D.B. Rouse – Love Is A Mexican Wrestling Match mp3 (from Vaudeville Routine)
Beautifully judged folk melancholia with lyrics that mix the everyday with the surreal.

Download Harriet – No Way Out mp3
Straddles the line between classic Americana songs and the sonic experimentation of electronic music.

Space Wolves – 6th Street
Mix of garage, surf and pop in a similar vein as The Babies.

Indian Jewelry – Eva Cherie
Taps into the primordial consciousness through dissonance and drone, with fractured melodies, white noise, and tribal energy.

Linfinity – Red Nation Waltz
Uptempo blend of indie folk.

Download Raymond Byron & The White Freighter – Little Death Shaker mp3 (from The Muse November Sampler)
Gauzy harmonies and sparse, buzzing guitar riffs that combine to create something dark, dreamy and imperfectly pretty.

Download Denison Witmer – In Your Hands mp3 (from Insound Digital Mixtape- November ’12)
As authentic a slice of dusty highway Americana as you’re likely to find anywhere.

Download The Winter Sounds – The Sun Also Rises mp3 (from Runner)
Frenetic, anthemic, catchy, and smart 80s inspired indie-pop.

Download Jacob Morris – Wet Cigarette mp3 (from Moths)
Jaunty, folk-inflected, psychedelic pop.

Widowspeak – Ballad Of The Golden Hour
Mazzy Star style jangle and psych-folk, given an uneasy twist that makes this a real gem

Downloads Joshua James – Queen Of The City mp3 (from From The Top Of Williamette Mountain)
First taste of singer-songwriter’s much anticipated new album.

Download The Dead Heads – When I’m Dead mp3 (from Go Ape Shit!)
Eclectc mix of 60s hippie flip to 90s scrungy grunge with a bit of shoegazey pyrotechnics and a dab of drone too.

Download The Merry Go Round – Yayaya mp3 (from Yayaya)
Energetic, no-frills swampy, sleazy blues and psychedelia.

Download Woollen Kits – Be You mp3 (from Four Girls)
Effortlessly channels the proto-punk sounds of Detroit and classic garage rock.

Download Black Market Karma – Jingle mp3 (from Easy Listening)
Hypnotic and pulsating space rock.

Red River Dialect – Dawns Man
Muscular, rolling bass lines and echoes of classic footstomping British sea shanties, twisting sinewy guitars and the fluid, hypnotic rhythms of the African desert, rockabilly twang and shimmering indie-style guitars. Brilliant.

Download Big Harp – You Can’t Save ‘Em All mp3 (from Chain Letters)
A song of pained apathy built on a foundation of crackling fuzz bass, angular electric guitars and keyboards.a

The Deadline Shakes – Don’t You Be Too Cool
New single from Glasgow based indie-rockers that ticks all the right boxes. Fizzy.

Algernon Doll – Son Of A Gun, Brother To None
Another taste from an album of off-kilter, deeply personal folk.

The Grand Prospect – Evelina
As good a slice of alt-country / Americana as you’re likely to come across in many a sunlit filled evening rocking on the back-porch.

Jason Lytle & Ben Bridwell – Don’t You Take It Too Bad
Top notch Townes Van Zandt cover – click through to download for free.

And to finish off we have The Longwalls stalking a line between noisy post-pop and twang with new tune Kowloon, which is the title track from a new 8 track EP. Then there is another taste from Theatre Royal’s forthcoming album At The End Of A River, The Sea… in the shape of prophetic track Will England Rain Itself Dry? The Pinery Boy is brilliant roadhouse honky-tonk inspired Americana from The Emperors Of Wyoming, and lastly Golden Void have offered up this free download of their cover of Jimi Hendrix’s 1983.

Mad Mackerel Recommends…Big Harp

Posted: November 19, 2012 in Americana, Indie, Music, Rock

Mad Mackerel Recommends...Big Harp.

We’re loving the pained apathy of this track, You Can’t Save ‘Em All from Big Harp’s forthcoming sophomore album Chain Letters, which is due early next year via Saddle Creek.

For this record, the duo of Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney is joined by their friend John Voris on drums. The album moves away from the rustic, pastoral sound of their debut White Hat, and towards something built on a foundation of crackling fuzz bass, angular electric guitars and keyboards. The songs on Chain Letters play like a series of character sketches centered around escape and surrender, and the blurred borders where the two become indistinguishable.

They say they were aiming for something akin to Leonard Cohen fronting the Pixies and that is not a bad description at all. Check it out for yourself.

Pre-order the album here.

Free Label Samplers From Saddle Creek, Jeffery Drag & Bridgetown.

Here are three excellent and completely free label samplers that are well worth getting your grubby mitts on.

The first comes from the wonderful Saddle Creek label and their thirteen track Summer Sampler 2012 includes offerings from The Mynabirds, Cursive, Tim Kasher, Bright Eyes and Maria Taylor.

The second is from Jeffery Drag Records and is a collection of ten tracks from some top-notch garage rock’n’rollers, punks and assorted ne’er-do-wells such as Bad ChildThe Hussy, Pujol, Useless Eaters, Natural Child and The Electric Dollhouse Groovebuggy amongst others.

Last, but by no means least comes a tasty sampler from the Bridgetown label. It is sixteen tracks taken from their nine summer releases and includes the likes of Secret Colors, Ultra Dome, Kevin Greenspon + Nicole Kidman and Former Selves. It is of the more experimental persuasion, but there is plenty to immerse yourself in and enjoy, particularly the darkly fragile folk of John Thill.

Some samples to whet the appetite below. Alternatively, just go and get the Saddle Creek Summer Sampler 2012 from for free here, get the Jeffrey Drag sampler from their Bandcamp page here, and download the full Bridgetown sampler from here.
