Round Up Time Again

Here is another collection of fifteen top tunes lovingly collected and filtered for your listening pleasure. So gather round and invest some time in these – a veritable aural treasure trove of tracks.

First up is another track of swaggering blues rock and roll in the shape of New York Avenue from the Delta Routine’s recently released album, Cigarettes And Caffeine Nightmares.

.

In a similar vein, the bravely named Velvets from down under, have a big, sleazy blues sound going on with their free download of Shoot You Down.

.

Darren Hayman has shortened his Long Parliament and returns with a new album of seventeenth century folk songs called Bugbears, which is due out on Fika Recordings in July. A companion piece to previous release, the very well received The Violence, have a listen to Seven Months Married.

.

Graham MacRae has shared a new single from his album Dundrearies and by the sound of Game Changer, those Bill Fay and Bill Callahan comparisons seem pretty much on the money.

.

Granite City is the lysergic new single from Aussie psych indie-rockers Deep Sea Arcade.

.

London’s Low Moon Low are set to release their first official single with Calm Now, sweetly melodic indie-folk that errs on the side of dreamy.

.

The wonderfully skewed world view of Justin Farren featured on MM back in March last year and he is back with a new album Another Bluebird Day from which we have Mostly In My Mind. This time he plays it a little straighter on the back of an upbeat folky strum and some scalpel sharp lyrics. Great stuff.

.

Spectrals have given us another track from new album Sob Story. Inspired by Dave EdmundsA Heartbeat Behind has a great riff and is full of rockabilly twang and heartbreak lyrics. No longer are the brothers low key, lo-fi merchants and it bodes very well for the album indeed.

.

Two Inch Astronaut have given up Blood From A Loyal Hound for download, a convulsive rocker propelled by a muscular power-pop melody.

.

Quilt hail from the eastern shores of Massachussets, where the band formed out of a tight-knit art collective in the winter months of 2009. They combine traditional folk vocal harmonies, reverb-drenched fingerpicking and meditative drum repetition in a patchwork of eclectic psych-folk ideally suited to their name. Open Eyes comes from a recent split single with MMOSS.

.

Carmen Villain, aka London-based Carmen Hillestad, recently released her fiery debut album, Sleeper. Introduce yourself to the darker and more psych-oriented side of the album via Made A Shell.

.

Half The Time, the A-side of recent 7″ single by Nick Ferrio & His Feelings is a psychological thriller, exploring one man’s realization that his love is unrequited and only exists within the confines of his fallible mind.

.

Like the excellent Allah-Lahs, The Young Sinclairs mix folk rock and garage rock with plenty of jangle in the style of The Byrds or Rain Parade and their most recent single Hurt My Pride is a top-notch example of what they are capable of.

.

Though we were late to it, we are loving the gorgeous Hymnal by In The Valley Below, a duo from Echo Park in LA who are a new musical pairing, delivering hushed swirls of male and female vocals forged with dark stories of brooding riddles and romance.

.

And lastly (for now) we have a taste from Robert Pollard’s (of Guided By Voices fame) new album Honey Locust Honky Tonk. The song, I Killed A Man Who Looks Like You is already one of our favourite titles of the year so far and thankfully the tune itself more than lives up to its title.

Round Up Time Again - Part 2

Here is another collection of just some of the notable new tunes that have come our way recently…we’re still catching up, so expect some more posts like this over the next few days.

Kicking off with Nightingale Floors which will be the fifth album from indie duo Rogue Wave. This is the first taste from it, a mighty fine track titled College.

.

We also have another taste from the forthcoming Alex Bleeker & The Freaks album How Far Away. This is Leave On The Light.

.

Someone Else is the second single from Pure X’s forthcoming Crawling up the Stairs LP.

.

Mikal Cronin also has a new album due in May titled MKII. This is the first taste, the breezy Weight.

.

Lauren Mann & The Fairly Odd Folk release new album Over Land And Sea next month full of captivating folk-pop melodies. This is the title track.

.

Camperdown & Out effortlessy evoke the golden age of jangle guitar pop with their excellent debut single Down & Out from their forthcoming LP Couldn’t Be Better – imagine Lou Reed, Kevin Ayres and the GoBetweens jamming together..

.

We’ve featured the glam-rock garage stomp of the Burnt Ones previously on MM, and Fountain of Youth from new album You’ll Never Walk Alone mines that territory even deeper. Time to dig out some platforms and some flares.

.

Spectrals are another that have featured a few times on MM and new single Milky Way comes from new long player Sob Story and on this evidence could be the best thing he’s done to date.

.

Jonny Fritz (Corndawg as was) has also offered up another track from his new release Dad Country due next month. This is the droll Goodbye Summer with honkytonk fiddle providing a suitable backdrop to his wry observations of life on the road.

.

Lau Blues is the second single from Gun Outfit’s album Hard Coming Down, which is out next week and somehow sits somewhere between The Meat Puppets and Lucinda Williams.

.

We were a bit slow in discovering the ominous, humming post-punk of Spray Paint, but Yawn Factory is an absolutely top-notch single so just in case you’ve not heard it either…

.

We’re also really liking Shovels & Rope’s interpretation of the Springsteen classic Johnny 99, which is a new single out on Third Man Records.

.

Virginia Wing (another to feature previously on MM) create thrillingly crafted pop tunes that exist within that time honoured dialogue between the popular and the avant-garde. Their sound veers from the minimalist post punk of Young Marble Giants, to the twisted 60s psych bliss of Arthur Lee and Love and the Radiophonic Workshop inspired cinematic krautpop of Broadcast. The excellent Red Sails is due to be released via Critical Heights on 6 May.

.

Courtesy of the always wonderful Yankee Calling blog comes Riptide by Australia’s Vance Joy, it has echoes of The Tallest Man On Earth about it and certainly marks him out as one to most definitely keep an eye on.

.

We are longtime admirers of Hawk And Dove and on forthcoming debut album, This Yesterday Will Never End, the band mixes hauntingly beautiful ballads with thunderous stoner grooves to create a sound quite unlike anything else. Grab yourself Things We Lost So Far and look out for the album at the end of April.

.

Lastly a track from Sweden’s The Fiery Piano, More Like A Tiger, Less Like A Dove is yet another fine example of the indie rock coming from that neck of the woods so to speak. Quirky, upbeat and melodic, for no good reason it makes us think of something Conor Oberst might do if he was off his tits on speed. You can get a free download of their album here.

No Direction Home Festival: Free Mixtape.

As you read this I will probably still be speeding northwards through the torrential rain on the M1 heading for Sherwood Forest and the inaugural No Direction Home music festival. Having spent the last two years happily enjoying the fantastic End of the Road festival, my plans were scuppered for a hat-trick by a sneaky move in dates making it clash with our first overseas family holiday in years to the beaches of Spain.

Thankfully, the same folk are behind this one so despite the rotten weather forecast, hopes are high for another fantastic event and judging by the line-up, we should be in for a treat. Friday night will be headlined by The Low Anthem, Saturday by Andrew Bird and Sunday by Richard Hawley. In between times we will have the pleasure of sets from Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny, Other Lives, Moon Duo, Lanterns On The Lake, The Wave Pictures, Wet Nuns, Father John Misty, Mikal Cronin and Spectrals. Best of all though will be discovering those artists and bands that we’ve not come across before and who turn out to be jaw-droppingly good.

Here is a free mix just to give you a taste of what we’ll be enjoying over the weekend, or if you fancy snapping up one of the last few tickets you can get one here.

Look out for a full review next week.

Friday Means Eight of the Best!

We’ve got good stuff coming out of our ears – quite literally at the moment. So here is the latest in our somewhat ad-hoc “of the best” feature comprising a trawl of the in-box and favourite blogs to bring you eight corking tunes to help get your Friday night off to a suitably energetic start.

We have Swedish punks Holograms and the clattering b-side to new 7″ single ABC City and another from paisley garage band White Fence with a taste from forthcoming album Family Perfume Vol 2 called King Of The Decade. Meanwhile Beast Make Bomb expertly combine the distorted punk attitude of the late 1970s with some classic fuzzed out pop melodies to deliver some sweetly addictive tunes, It Snowed Last Night comes from new EP Skinny Legs.

We have a slow-burning, fuzzed up new track from Spectrals and a taste of experimental indie rock from AU’s scheduled new album Both Lights and another excellent slice of psych-pop from New York’s Violens with Der Microarc which will feature on their new album True.

The Plastic Traps are new to us, but they come from Philly, are a two-piece and they provide a most appetising selection of haunting, reverb soaked vocals mixed with hazily hypnotic guitars and primal drums. This track, Corridor, comes from debut album Find A Home (available for free via Bandcamp here). And lastly we tone things down nicely with another track from Jenny Gillespie’s new EP Belita in the shape of Sunshine Blood, another intoxicating and heady blend of indie, folk and pop.

Download The Cabin Dogs – High Falls mp3 (from Midnight Trail)

Invites you to kick off your boots, pour a stiff one and sit on the porch to watch the sun go down – a song for when you’re busy doing nothing as they say.

Spritely and upbeat that melds 60s girl group fizz with Elvis Costello in an entirely good way.

Delicate and almost hymn-like indie rock with a sparse, raw feel.

Download Male Bonding – Tame The Sun mp3 (from Endless Now)

Excellent slice of punky power pop.

First taster from specialists in weirded out country folk and blues doesn’t disappoint.

Download The Coasts – Handshakers mp3 (from The Coasts)

Rigid, pulsating version of Pink Floyd classic.

Folky, harmony filled and gorgeous.

Download Blessed Feathers – Stinging Nettle, Honeysuckle mp3 (from From The Mouths Of The Middle Class)

A bitterly beautiful reminder of winter’s immediacy in the Midwest.

Effortlessly channeling early Velvets rumble and the simple, but effective chord sequences of the Kingsmen into a classic garage sound.

More lo-fi, slacker punk goodness.

And to finish off we have new tracks for you too – a chaotic, hook ridden pop gem from Oberhofer, an unsettling six minutes of astral pop from Atlas Sound, attractive indie jangle from Sweden’s Youngfuck, and the infectious pulsing rhythms and quirky imagery of Big Tree.

Spectrals Prep New Album.Bad Penny is to be the debut album from UK singer-songwriter Louis Jones, better known as Spectrals.

This is the first single, the spritely, upbeat Big Baby, that melds 60s girl group fizz with Elvis Costello in an entirely good way. The single will precede the album, which is out in October on Wichita.

Download Spectrals – Big Baby mp3 (from Big Baby 7″)

Underwater Peoples is one of our favourite labels and so we were delighted to recently receive an e- mail from them about Spectrals and their forthcoming new EP.

Hailing from the small town of Heckmondwike, 10 miles south-west from Leeds, Louis Jones is softly spoken with a shock of ginger hair. He was brought up on a mixture of soul, Motown and doo-wop, and as you might expect, Spectrals’ influences include Phil Spector (hence the name), Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Isley Brothers alongside a healthy dose of good old garage rock.

You can watch the video for Peppermint below, and then download our sample track, the hazy, lo-fi and reverbed goodness that is Chip A Tooth (Spoil A Smile).

Both come from their new A Spectrals Extended Play EP.

You can order direct from the label here.

Visit their MySpace here.
