Round Up

Time to round up a few more of the releases that have tickled our ears from the inbox and round the web.

Ali Koehler has hitherto been best known as the drummer of the pop group Best Coast and the noisy girl punk trio Vivian Girls. After her departure from Best Coast, Koehler decided to step up from behind the kit to front a band of her own, embracing her melodic punk-spirited songwriting impulses with Upset. The new three-piece will release its hooky debut record of pop-punk, She’s Gone, this autumn. Take a listen to Oxfords and Wingtips from it.

.

We posted Wake Up Lucid’s track I Want at the end of September and this is the ominous, jagged b-side, Let It Roll.

.

Rural Ghosts recently released their debut long player City Of Elms. It is a fine record of folk tinged indie rock distinguished by driving rhythms and haunting lyrical content. Take a listen to a couple of tracks, Limbo and Eyes.

.

Ten Ton Man’s Drinking Song comes from their self -titled debut album of minimal, gritty, Americana with a lyrically dark slant. The sinister undertones of this track perfectly encompass the feelings of someone who is down on their luck. With his signature baritone voice, frontman Paul Livornese sings the gloomy lyrics, “Sing along to the drinking song//When the booze is gone //You’ll be all alone.”  Something many of us can relate to at one time or another…

.

Black Hearted Brother is the new band formed by Neil Halstead (Slowdive, Mojave 3), Nick Holton (Coley Park, Holton’s Opulent Oog) and Mark Van Hoen (Locust, Seefeel). Listen to the excellent  (I Don’t Mean To) Wonder from the trio’s debut album Stars Are Our Home which is officially released tomorrow (order here).

.

Foul Play is the excellent first track from all girl garage-pop trio Sharkmuffin’s second EP 1097 which is released next Wednesday.

.

Buzzard Lope recently released their debut single East By East on their own label Lost Toys Records. The single blends frontman Roger Illingworth’s husky vocal – reminiscent of Mark Lanegan – with Adam Jarvis’ brooding double bass.

.

Lem and The White Fire are a distinctive soul/pop/folk 11-piece collective who have released their catchy debut single Telephone – it features a memorable sing-a-long chorus and a rousing riff from the brass section of the collective.

.

Haunting vocals stand at the forefront of La Guerre’s new EP, Violent, which is the solo project of Katlyn Conroy, a member of the band Cowboy Indian Bear. Listen to the lovely, sultry Sorrow Song.

.

Huckleberry Binge are a whirl of fuzzed-out folk rock and murky pop anthems. They released their Tornado EP back at the end of the summer, but Fur Trapper from it is too good not to post – better late than never.

.

We have another track from Lola Colt, Jackson is their second single (out 2nd December) and is another top notch track of fuzzy, blistered guitars and twangy psychedelia.

.

Singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow built up a huge following after the release of his debut album Early In The Morning, and Cavalier is the evocative first single from January’s follow up album Post Tropical.

.

The Witch Hunt return with the release of their debut EP Little Book of Hate on Dead Young Records, a collection of five songs showcasing a promising range and depth, with dark, twisted melodies and haunting vocals. The follow up to their second single Crawl, immerse yourself in the visceral and threatening Army Man from the EP.

.

Lastly (for now) we have the new single from Melbourne indie-folk quartet Sleepy Dreamers. Titled Bike Song it features a catchy hook, four part vocal harmonies and a good dose of handclaps – pretty sure to evoke some foot-stomping action.

Round Up Time Again

Too many good songs, too little time to do them justice. Accept this offering as the best compromise we can muster, but explore these tunes – they are well worth it – even if we are a bit slow getting some of them to your attention!

Kicking us off are indie duo Big Deal and a new single from their much acclaimed album of dark, intoxicating, occasionally grungy delights,  June Gloom. Download Swapping Spit here, which is possibly our favourite track from the album.

.

Next up are Such Hounds and the title track from their new I Hate Summer EP, an excellent collection of raucous, ragged Americana with touch-points as diverse as Neil Young, the Misfits and The Replacements.

.

Sweden’s Great Hare are offering up a free download of Like Flowers, an engaging excursion into dreamy, indie-pop.

.

Lo Fine have been around for 15 years or so, playing their own brand of literate, thoughtful, slowcore tinged Americana and have a new album of the same called Want Is A Great Need due in November. Check out Lie In White from it.

.

Beautiful Fools is an indie rock three piece band from Adelaide, influenced by bands like Radiohead, Band Of Horses, and Bon Iver. The sound they create is quite big and moody and featured single Small Town tackles the classic themes of being stuck in a rut and fading dreams.

.

Sun Club deal in what they term, “dirty sunshine pop”, and new single Beauty Meat is well worth picking up on a pay-what-you-want offer via their Bandcamp page here.

.

12 Dirty Lovers recent EP Eyeball Madness is a collection of feral sounding, outsider’s indie rock and art-punk – think Pavement, Sonic Youth and Devo fighting to the death in a sack.

.

We’re rather late to the delights of September Girls who released this excellent slice of post-punk, noise pop for Cassette Store Day earlier in the month. However, the two tracks, Ships and Flesh are just too good not to post, and precede a new single in October and a debut album in January.

.

The experimental feel to the ‘neo-Americana’ of Arrison Kirby is prominent on forthcoming new three track release, The Micro Jackson EP. Lead track Action features features Dustin Milotte (Star Mountain, Hypenkrunk) on guitar and the mysterious Brite Flowers on bass.

.

Weird Owl are long standing residents of the New York psych-rock scene and have a new five track release Healing out on the 15th October. Try the cosmic karma and ambient trippiness of the title track.

.

We’ve featured the punkish, sleazy blues of Burning Condors in the past and have been enjoying their most recent release Polka Dot Girl backed with Judgement – and available digitally or as a limited edition cassette.

.

The dark, blistered lullaby that is Colonies by Battle Lines, is an intense soundscape of stark melodies and brittle, fractured guitars.

.

Maths and the Moon are an alt-psyche three piece who release their debut album Night Train Daydream today. Mixing drone, shoegaze and good old fashioned space-rock, try the motorik euphoria of Polychrome.

.

Miraculous Mule make rock ‘n’ roll infused spirituals, immersed in gothic Americana and this is their excellent single Dangerous Blues, released last week, and taken from forthcoming long player Deep Fried.

.

We have surf-infused indie rock from LA based Hills, and a free download of their new track of garage-meets-beach-pop, Would You Love Me.

 .

It is another case of better late than never with Wake Up Lucid’s new 7″ I Want, which saw a release earlier this month as a part of a split with the Dead Ships. Scuzzy, grimy, garage blues of the very best kind.

.

Cloud Person’s Monochrome Places long player is a haunting, sometimes whimsical, blend of folk, rock, gospel and psychedelia. Available from their Bandcamp page, this is a free download of Robber Barons.

.

Lastly, for now, we have The Deep Red Sky and their introspective reworking of the MGMT classic Kids. It will be released as a digital single on the 7th October.

Introducing...Wake Up Lucid. Wake Up Lucid is a LA based three piece band of cousins that combines sex-drenched vocals, high octane guitar, and a glorious lo-fi sludge that is garage rock at its purest and most dangerous. More grime than the Black Keys and far more savage than The White Stripes, their 2011 Sugar EP was described by Rolling Stone as “raunchy rock at it’s best”.

Their debut album is due out on 7th August, and the title track delivers a raw, primordial riff that will peel the paint from the walls before it settles into a bump ‘n’ grind rhythm that is so sleazy you can almost feel your speakers throbbing with pleasure.

You have been warned!
