Having just been away for a few days sampling the sights and sounds of Denmark with Mrs Mackerel and the Sprats, my packing shortcomings meant we ended up with just one CD in the hire car – the free one with the latest edition of Country Music Magazine.

While there were more than a few highlights on there, the song of the holiday undoubtedly became Breaking Out by Danny & The Champions of the World, from their excellent 2013 album Stay True.

Echoing the spirit of a mellow Neil Young, quoting from Big Star’s Thirteen and name checking Kerouac and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, it is a gem of a country ballad that has survived, and thrived, on repeated listenings.
