Listening to Brooklyn’s The Minks forthcoming single Funeral Song (out on Captured Tracks later this month, with an album due in September) is like going back in time to the goth tinged indie glory days of The Cure, The Bunnymen et al. Even the hair is the same.
Funeral Song (an appropriately gloomy title) has a vintage Cure bassline, icy synths and shadowy, sombre lyrics about heartbreak and the end of the summer. If you want a modern day comparison, you might say they were treading a similar path as The Drums, just doing it during the nighttime rather than sunning themselves on a beach.
So, as with the Drums, not so much plagiarism as nostalgia, and when it is done this well, thoroughly enjoyable.
