MM’s Covers Up Again

Here are a few more of the cover versions that have recently crossed MM’s path and are well worth a listen.

First up, Stereogum have released an excellent tribute to the Strokes Is This It album featuring a whole host of buzzworthy bands and available completely free from their website. Just click here to grab it, or listen to Real Estate’s version of Barely Legal below.

Also a tribute is BEAT L.A. a charity benefit album (the compilation’s proceeds to go benefit Doctors Without Borders’ Haiti relief efforts – details here) featuring current L.A. bands covering songs from the city’s past. For example, tracks by X, the Germs, and the Minutemen, as well as the Doors and Cheech & Chong. Here are a couple of tasters covering The Urinals and Black Randy & the Metrosquads that have been doing the rounds.

Elsewhere The Postelles have made an EP of cover versions available for the price of an e-mail address – called Summer Undercovers, you can get it here. This is their take on a Smiths classic.

Two new (to us anyway) singer songwriters, AIVA and Jodie Marie have tackled Nick Drake and Joan Baez and offered up the results for free. See what you think.

The Kinks track Alcohol from 1972 album Everybody’s In Show-Biz is covered by Mr Lewis & The Funeral 5 on their new album Delirium Tremendous.

And lastly, here is The Kills with their own take on Marilyn Monroe’s One Silver Dollar. It is from an in-studio acoustic session for Australian radio station Triple J.
