Firstly that is a great name. Conjures up an image of a stick-thin, ne’er-do-well in some dusty, forgotten border town drinking, stealing cars and dealing drugs. But then maybe that’s just us…
Anyway, one of MM’s rules is the music should fit the band’s name and thankfully here we’re on to a winner. Speedy Ortiz are a western Massachusetts-based, female-fronted, guitar-heavy four piece. For reference points they gave us Pavement, Helium, Built To Spill and Liz Phair, which is quite a quartet.
They have a new single, Taylor Swift b/w Swim Fan and both tracks are a delight of sweetly woozy vocals over scrappy, fuzzed up guitars and splashes of reverb. While they recall the halcyon days of slacker indie rock, Speedy Ortiz add their own twist of vintage garage to proceedings, creating something that stands comparison with the best that is out there at the minute.
