Mike Scheidt is a new name to us, but he is a native Oregonian who did time in the 80s hardcore scene and is best known for his band YOB.

What interested us though was that beyond his punk and metal leanings, Scheidt was drawn to Townes Van Zandt, CSNY, Merle, Travis and Guy Clarke. It is these influences that have found their way on to his first solo album Stay Awake. The tunes are simple, effective, personal and dramatic. There is authentic heart and soul in this record and it is brave indeed to present them in such an open and unflinchingly honest way – Scheidt does not hide or protect himself from the listener’s inquisitive ear and as a result he has created something that is powerfully intense and rewarding.
