We have been fans of The Agnostic Gospel Mountain Choir since we first heard the rollicking, raw, country-blues stomp of Ten Thousand a few years ago. They seem to have been relatively quiet since then so it was a great delight to discover that they had linked up with Jackson Phibes frontman of garage-punk, underground legends Forbidden Dimension to form The Agnostic-Phibes Rhythm & Blood Conspiracy. Back in January they released the fruits of their labours with Campfire Tales, which will now get a UK release via S.A.P. Recordings on the 16th July.
On the face of it, the collaboration might seem an odd one, but the result is exactly what you might have hoped for: authentic, insanity tinged, twisted punk-blues! These are wonderfully warped and deformed tales of the macabre delivered with a gleeful, bloodthirsty howl and a boneshaking rattle from deep in the backwoods.
Heed our words, for this is not a record for the weak-willed or faint of heart. No sir, feral hunger and salacious desire ooze from every pore of this record and strike the unwary just as quick and as deadly as a rattlesnake hidden in the dry leaves.
We heartily recommend you get bitten immediately. Listen to the dual-guitar hooks on country-blues-meets-gypsy- freakout Wolfman Franz (an ode to an eastern European madman); or Neckin’ Party, a hypnotic swamp rock tale of teenage lust and voyeurism gone horribly awry.
We also heartily recommend that you purchase Campfire Tales on the 16th July!
