San Francisco’s Philistines wonderfully mangled pop takes well established songwriting rules and gleefully contorts them into something entirely new until they either give in, or shatter into musical shrapnel.

Drums, melodic and addictive. Bass, propulsive and charging at one moment, quiet and claustrophobic the next. Guitars, spiraling leads transformed into gnarled ditties that zigged when they wanted to zag. Sour notes linger, until that note no longer sounds sour at all, and even the catchiest song belies dark lyrics; never has the cynical refrain, “it’s all been done,” sounded so inspiring.
