Middle Sprat’s Top Songs Of 2012

MM's Top Tunes Of 2012: Middle Sprat

As well as our Top 100 tunes of the year posts over the past five days, each of the MM contributors have put together their own lists. Second up is our very own Middle Sprat…

15. Delta Spirit – California

14. Felice Brothers – Lincoln Continental

13. Last American Buffalo – Break My Heart

12. Goodnight, Texas – Jesse Got Trapped in Coal Mine

11. Lost Brothers – Not Now Warden

10. Howler – Back of Your Neck

9. The Pines – Cry Cry Crow
I love this song’s eerie feeling, with the tune being played on guitar in the background, and the singer’s voice, they all blend together really well to make a great song.

8. Savages – Husbands
With a great beat and an awesome chorus of “My house/ my bed/ my husbands/ husbands…”, this song always has me dancing (badly) and singing along. Husbands is punk rock. Full stop.

7. Eugene McGuiness -Shotgun
What a great song over the top of Duane Eddy’s Peter Gunn, with the catchiest chorus of the year:  ”Every time I dance, every time I dance with you, I”ll stagger out the night club black and blue, battered and bruised…”

6. Spector – Chevy Thunder

5. Kyle Adem – Brother Follow

4. First Aid Kit – Blue

3. Jake Bugg – Lightning Bolt
Awesomely twangy guitar and a Sun-era rockabilly rhythm. The ghost of Johnny Cash is alive and well and comes from Nottingham. I love this song which is becoming more and more famous, even being used in the Olympics for Mr Usain.

2. King Charles – Love Lust
This great indie-pop song always has me dancing. I love the lyrics and the fizzing, funky beat it has going on. My favourite song off one of my favourite albums of 2012.

1. We Are Augustines – Juarez
This song always had me singing really loudly (and badly) at the top of my voice, usually where it goes “Lord I see red, and it’s storming in my head / I got cathedrals in my ears and I think my Daddy’s dead / Lord I see red and I’m prayin’ on my bed / I got a drunk for a mother / Got a saint for a brother”

Apart from I have neither a saint for a brother nor a drunk for Mother… Anyway, with a great tune, and amazing vocals, this song is definitely my favourite of the year!

And the best song I heard for the first time, but is not this year is Working for the Government by the Crooked Brothers.

Download The Crooked Brothers – Working For The Government mp3 (from Lawrence, Where’s Your Knife)

You can find downloads, streams, or videos for all the other tracks above by checking out MM’s Top 100 tunes here: 100 – 8180 – 6160 – 4140 – 21 and 20 – 1.

  1. Great choices MS. Really pleased you got Chevy Thunder into your top songs of 2012 … brilliant track. I almost wish I’d included it myself now 😦
