For Brighton’s Chappaqua Wrestling, the arrival of new single Football is the product of both embracing change, and an unfortunately enforced break from touring. The band’s hiatus gleefully allowing them to side-step some of the nostalgic sounds of recent singles Plant Trees, Is She Happy Turning On Her Side? and Early, and instead leaning into a world of big-hearted, world-weary, understated anthemia.
A thick, sprawling, looping guitar riff swirls around a story of social displacement, and unease in one’s surroundings. “I hate your friends / That’s me out” is the cyclical croon from lead singer Charlie Woods. It’s one of those tracks that does a lot with a little, building and building around one main riff, becoming denser and denser until it finally erupts into blissfully distorted euphoria.
