Over Nights are a new band hailing from Brooklyn, NY. They have just released a single Broken Cabins from their upcoming debut; The Broken EP, which we’ll wager is as sweetly melodic slice of banjo led, backporch Americana as you’ll hear this weekend. Put us to the test – have a listen. Get it on a pay-what-you-want deal at their Bandcamp page here. Continue reading MM Shorts 392: Over Nights
Viewed the press release about new ‘hotly tipped trio’ Sisters and their debut single Clearhead with some scepticism. “Dreamgrunge” – pah! We were wrong. Totally wrong. This one more than lives up to the hype. A wonderfully fuzzy, breezy up-tempo summer jam that proves (when it is done well) that there is still a place for classic indie-pop made up of jangly guitars, sweet harmonies and … Continue reading Introducing >>> Sisters
Kickstart your weekend with a sleazy, adrenalin fuelled shot of The Floors, who are releasing a new single of bluesy, sonic mayhem, Built From Bones, on limited 7” vinyl. The b-side is taken from last year’s debut album Dead Beat – the wonderful delta blues bump ‘n’ grind of Pick Up Your Bones. Naturally, with two songs mentioning bones, the tour to support this little gem is called…The Bones Tour. … Continue reading MM Shorts 391: The Floors
We have been long standing admirers of the sibling duo Brad and Jessica Lauretti who have released a couple of albums and toured pretty relentlessly as This Frontier Needs Heroes. They have a new album due in late August, Hooky benefits from the clever use of additional band members to bring an added dimension to their already sweetly rich harmonies. The taster track is the intriguingly … Continue reading New Album From This Frontier Needs Heroes
Videos this morning from Low for Plastic Cup (one of our favourite songs of the year so far), and from ‘slowcore’ to the sonic mayhem of Destruction Unit and their video for Sonic Pearl. We also have intelligent, sophisticated indie-pop from Big Scary and their video for Luck Now. Finally in Guanajuato, Mexico, nine girls bail out of two 4x4s and immediately start their freaky dancing … Continue reading Videos of the Day: Low || Destruction Unit || Big Scary || Hooded Fang
What a treat to have the anthemic, high powered punk riffing of No Age back on the scene. This is C’mon Stimmung, a first taste from new album, An Object, out via Sub Pop in August. Have no fear, it doesn’t disappoint! . Continue reading MM Shorts 390: No Age Are Back
Here are eight of the very best tracks to reach out to us from our inbox and the internet over the past few days. First up we have a new track from the forthcoming album Soft Will from Smith Westerns, which distills the spirit of Big Star into a delicately reverential tribute to classic 70s radio rock. We have the superbly maudlin, gloom-pop of Franklin the … Continue reading Thursday Means Eight Of The Best
Black Joe Lewis have announced details of their brand new full-length LP, Electric Slave, to be released on August 27 on Vagrant Records. The first taste is the excellently named Skulldiggin, which grips from the off with a blistering, distorted blues riff of righteous fury and a gruff vocal of just the right amount of hellfire and brimstone zeal to match. Welcome back boys! Continue reading New Album From Black Joe Lewis
Garage noiseniks Speedy Ortiz have featured a number of times on Mad Mackerel and it is fair to say we are very much looking forward to their debut long player Major Arcana, which is out in less than a month on Carpark Records. No Below is the second single to be taken from it and offers more than enough to whet the appetite for the … Continue reading New Single From Speedy Ortiz
. Taken from their eagerly anticipated debut album (set for release in the autumn), here is the thumping first single from Whales In Cubicles. Disappear is a song about the fragility and fleeting nature of identity. Set against a riotous backdrop of Smashing Pumpkins-esque guitars and driving drums, it is certainly a pretty big statement of sonic intent from the band. Continue reading MM Shorts 389: Whales In Cubicles New Single
