Toronto-based indie folk septuplet Beams has released Be My Brother, the debut single from their upcoming full-length album, Just Rivers. The lush instrumentation and lovely vocal harmonies hide the fact that lyrically something altogether more discomforting and baleful lies beneath the surface. It gives the band an edge that many of their contemporaries in this field either lack, or are unwilling to find. The digital … Continue reading Introducing >>> Beams
Enjoy music videos from Mice Parade and their beautiful film for This River Has A Tide and London based folksinger Lucy Cait’s strange and hypnotic Gabriel’s Wharf, the title track from her debut EP. After taking a couple of years off to focus on other projects, Krist Krueger returns to the Southerly moniker and celebrates with a new single and video for Desolation Low. And … Continue reading Videos of the Day: Mice Parade || Lucy Cait || Southerly || Autumn Owls
With Sacred Bones release of New Moon, The Men will have delivered their fourth full length album in four years. And this might well be the best. Piano, mandolin, harmonica, four-part vocal harmonies and even no-input harsh noise all weave their way through the record in the most perfectly judged and engaging manner. Proof? Take a listen to I Saw Her Face. Continue reading MM Shorts 331: The Men – New Moon
We’ve been long standing advocates of Salesman’s and so are delighted to offer you their latest single Horn for download. Released a couple of days ago it is built on a mantra and will appear on their summer release Escalante. For those who don’t know (and we didn’t) Escalante is in southern Utah – it’s the staircase the moon climbs every night. The horn in … Continue reading New Salesman Single
The first track of woozy, psych-pop we posted by Australian band Blank Realm was an absolute corker. An epic of melancholic churn and burn and noisy guitar squalls. The second track we have for you, and the title track from their forthcoming long player Go Easy is (you guessed it) another absolute corker. This one takes 90s slacker indie and buries it in a heady swirl … Continue reading Another Gem From Blank Realm
Enjoy short films of the musical variety today from Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards showcasing the rich, gorgeous, melancholia of first single Sheets taken from forthcoming album Blindspot. Then there is some leather clad pop cool from Finland’s French Films and some rather fine alt-folk from Scotland’s Woodenbox . And to finish, some lowdown sleazy garage-blues and drag-act inspired footage from Australia’s Delta Riggs for their track … Continue reading Videos of the Day: Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards || French Films || Woodenbox || The Delta Riggs
The wonderful Brown Bird, they of the skeletal, sparse folk tales and eerie southern gothic country, will release a new album Fits of Reason on the 2nd April. That is more than enough reason to celebrate on its own, but even better, you can now listen to the first single from the album, the appropriately titled Seven Hells below. Pre-order the album from their Bandcamp page. … Continue reading Brown Bird Are Back

Back last summer we wholeheartedly commended Conner Youngblood’s imaginative blend of folk and electronica to you. Now he has given us a new song Vegas, which kicks off with some ominous ringing guitar over which his vocals echo and swirl before slow but hypnotic percussion cuts in and the song gradually increases in intensity before finally fading away like a firework over a night sky. Download … Continue reading New From Conner Youngblood
