It’s a wash out. Bloody water everywhere. Surely someone, somewhere, realised that “Mackerel” was a pseudonym? Hurumph. Thanks go to the Young and Lost Club this week who sent me a very nice tote bag via MM. I like bags. A lot. And I’m often lost. Sadly, I’m no longer young. Sniff. But 50 per cent ain’t bad; it’s a bag of two halves anyway. … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (September 23rd)
About a month ago we streamed a track from Wooden Wand’s forthcoming album Briarwood that was initially funded through a Kickstarter campaign and now is getting a full release via Fire Records – out 22nd November. We posted back in May about mysterious UK duo Savaging Spires and their spooky mix of freakish aicd-folk and psychedelic drone. Recently we received a copy of their self-titled debut album on vinyl which is a lovely object in itself, and a few plays has revealed plenty more delights too. There’s is a world of twilight and shadowy murmurs, of glimpses of overgrown country houses … Continue reading Savaging Spires Debut Album

In late spring of 2011, Catherine AD and her all female string section recorded new mini album Communion, live and in a single day. Communion is a collection of songs stripped of drums and modern technology that are haunted by a heavy heart and her incredible voice, which is by turns haunting, mesmerising, and chilling. The record will be released as a mini album on Outsiderhood on 10th October … Continue reading Mini Album From Catherine AD

Folkish London duo The Skeleton Dead were originally a discovery of the esteemed Mrs Mackerel, and their brand of often malevolent, and occasionally macabre, lyrics contrast wonderfully with their sparsely delicate instrumentation. We previously described them as genuinely haunting – in the best sense of the word of course. Now they have completed their self titled debut album and made it available for free download via … Continue reading Free Album Download From The Skeleton Dead
As I recall Blind Pilot were the support band for the Decemberists gig we went to earlier this year in Birmingham. And, to be honest, I didn’t take enough notice of them to form an opinion either way as to their merits or otherwise. However, last week they released their new album We Are The Tide and taster track Keep You Right is a lovely … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…Blind Pilot
