Even more lo-fi garage psych-goodness

Looks like we’re on a major lo-fi, garage roll this Friday. We’re mighty glad those downloads are fixed! Hopefully, you’ve already picked up the excellent tracks from The Burnt Ones and The Jacuzzi Boys from earlier, and now we have for your aural delight the b-side to the forthcoming Cloud Nothings single Didn’t You. Titled Even If It Worked Out, it is brash, snotty, and … Continue reading Even more lo-fi garage psych-goodness

Introducing…The Burnt Ones

We came across The Burnt Ones whilst idly trawling the net. While they fit comfortably in to the garage rock genre, they’ve turned up the sleaze-ometer to eleven and specialise in dirty, hook-laden surf rock and heavy doses of 7os glam. The results are wonderful. First we tracked down fuzzy, wall-of-sound guitar onslaught of  Gonna Listen To T Rex (All Night Long) which is the … Continue reading Introducing…The Burnt Ones

Downloading issues fixed I think

Our downloading issues are fixed! Josh and a few other readers of MM had pointed out some issues with actually downloading the mp3s from the blog. After much investigation and some help from Uncle Mike, we think the problem is solved. Apparently the automatic advertising that WordPress adds to posts can mess up the link access and stop them being found properly. The answer? You … Continue reading Downloading issues fixed I think

Insound’s Free June Mixtape

Insound.com have made their free June mixtape available here. As always, it will only be up for around a week (so be quick), and as always it is packed full of excellent tracks, which can all be yours in return for an e-mail address. MM’s Best Of The Month: May

Saturday Round-Up

Here is a lazy blogger’s round-up of some of the new tracks that we’ve come across and enjoyed over the past few days and weeks, some of which might tickle your ears in a good way. The Moondoggies delivered a cracking album in 2008’s Don’t Be A Stranger and have a follow-up due in September titled Tidelands. In the meantime they are releasing a five track … Continue reading Saturday Round-Up

Remixes & Covers: all thanks to the Wooden Shjips

As some may know MM is not a massive fan of remixes as a general rule of thumb. In truth, it is rare for us to listen to them and rarer still to actually post them. We’re a little more well disposed to covers, though again they are not usually something we post that often. So with that said, this is a post that naturally … Continue reading Remixes & Covers: all thanks to the Wooden Shjips

Mad Mackerel Recommends…The Futurebirds

The Futurebirds play the kind of off-kilter, psychedelic and slightly ramshackle country rock that MM likes. A lot. Having released a freely available self-titled  6 track EP, they are now readying their debut album Hampton’s Lullaby (out July on Autumn Tone Records). We’re looking forward to acquainting ourselves fully with the record and check out advance track Johnny Utah to see why. Until then, go … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…The Futurebirds

Mad Mackerel Recommends…The Diamond Center

The Diamond Center are psychedelic folk-rockers who pair a wall of reverb and noise with an eerie gothic country creeper, creating an unique blend that is hard to put a finger on. Influenced by albums spanning the musical spectrum, they hint of Phil Spector and Joe Meek’s experimental studio style, the live rawness of the Velvet Underground, as well as the nouveau psych-folk stylings of … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…The Diamond Center

Wooden Wand releases Wither Thou Goest, Cretin

It’s been a long time since MM has used the word cretin, despite it being a prime insult of choice during long-ago school days. So who better than MM fave Wooden Wand to resurrect it into our daily vocabulary. Following (for him) a rather lengthy silence since the outstanding Born Bad album, he has self-released Wither Thou Goest, Cretin in a limited edition of 200 … Continue reading Wooden Wand releases Wither Thou Goest, Cretin
