Mad Mackerel Recommends…Brave Baby

Brave Baby is an indie rock band from Charleston, South Carolina. Their debut album Forty Bells, which was released last month on the Hearts & Plugs label, centres on the long-lost-but-never-forgotten feelings discovered in childhood and early encounters with love. Vocally it brings to mind the arresting urgency and honesty found in the voice of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. It is backed by solid, propulsive timekeeping and some … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…Brave Baby

MM Shorts 320: Aan

We’re not quite sure what to make of this by Aan…the more we play it the more we like it, but it kicks off like a weird slice of freak folk before morphing into something much more edgy and direct yet still with an experimental feel. Then just as abruptly it becomes like a nightmare nursery rhyme and then… Well just listen and make your … Continue reading MM Shorts 320: Aan

MM’s (Slightly Lazy) Friday Round Up

We start with apologies aplenty for the lack of interesting and cogent words to accompany this post of many new, and excellent tunes. We are regularly afflicted by an internal conflict as to whether we use our time to write the original, erudite prose some of the songs we are sent deserve (as many of the much better, and smarter blogs than ours do), but … Continue reading MM’s (Slightly Lazy) Friday Round Up

The Return Of Neils Children. MM Celebrates

Way back, as a fledgling listener to new digital channel Radio 6, the first brilliant completely “new” record I remember hearing was the stop-start indie venom of I Hate Models by a band called Neils Children. That first listen made the whole expense of a digital radio seem worthwhile! I bought the criminally under-rated album Change/Return/Success and then apart from a couple of singles they … Continue reading The Return Of Neils Children. MM Celebrates

New Mexico: New Album

San Diego post-punkers New Mexico will self-release their new album Malpais on the 23rd April. The album is the result of many things: a bad breakup with a girl, a new recording technique using Otari 16-track one-inch tape, and Robert Kent’s newfound fascination with Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.  For now, grab yourself the excellent Alpha Male below (click through for a free download), which … Continue reading New Mexico: New Album
