It is fair to say that along with The Cave Singers, the album we are most looking forward to hearing in the early part of 2013 is Phosphorescent’s Muchacho, due out on the 19th March via Dead Oceans. Matthew Houck has delivered five albums as Phosphorescent since his 2003 debut. However, it was 2007’s Pride – a delicate and spare, haunted and haunting work of … Continue reading First Taste From Phosphorescent’s New Album

Tucked away in the east of our small island, often forgotten and neglected, the Fens has long bewitched people with its mysteries. It is a place of shrouded fog and hidden meanings, damp mists and watery hiding places. It is where Magwich first confronted Pip in Great Expectations, inspired the “Fenny snake” serpent of Macbeth, and, more recently, had its bleak moroseness captured perfectly in … Continue reading Straw Bear Release Black Bank Today

We posted about the nihilistic world view of Fires back in June with news of their EP Echo Sounds. Angels In The Dark is a new five track EP that we are glad to report carries on that exact same approach – imagine the scuzz-rock blitzkrieg of Butthole Surfers, combined with the melody and songcraft of Urge Overkill and you might be getting close. Whatever it is, … Continue reading Fires Return

It’s Top Ten time at Mackerel Headquarters, with all the usual suspects listening, compiling and scribing. It’s been a tickety boo year for new music: long dog walks or runs in empty frozen fields with Mr M Dog are just the medicine for listening, dancing and singing along. But it’s just so damn hard to choose, and as Blackadder once said: “We are in the … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (7th December)
Back in October we posted about Jemez Mountain Hawkz, a band made up of members of The Shins and Scared Of Chaka. It was to mark the release of their excellent debut EP of indie flavoured Americana titled Hey-Mez. With methodical, twangy guitars and velvety harmonizing, new single from the EP Long Ride Home is a really gorgeous joint that revamps the traditional sitting-alone-at-the-bar-blues vibe. It … Continue reading More From Jemez Mountain Hawk
