Got myself in a bit of a curry on Friday, a little bit jaded on Saturday, and bit of a day of indulgence today, it being Mothering Sunday and all that. It’s been a funny old week. Big Sair and I laughed our way around Southampton in an attempt to locate Laura Marling. Unfortunately, we managed to miss Timber Timbre in support as I realised … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday – on Sunday (18th March)
We’ve posted a couple of times from the Sick Figures excellent album Two Ghosts released back in the autumn of 2011, and they have now made another track available for free. This is the morbidly portentous Manor Song, a slow, swirling velvet fog of a tune. a Continue reading MM Shorts 121: More From Sick Figures

Roadkill Ghost Choir are a (excellently named) 6 piece band from Deland, Florida and play spacey folk rock. Influences range from Radiohead to Gram Parsons. Their debut album called Quiet Light is in the final stages of completion and should see the light of day in May. In The Lion’s Mouth is the first taste. a Continue reading MM Shorts 119: Roadkill Ghost Choir
And so it was to Birmingham and the HMV Institute to see the rescheduled, and still hotly anticipated, Felice Brothers gig with the Hold Steady’s Craig Finn as support replacing the previously scheduled AA Bondy. We parked in a back street, bathed in the blue neon of a tired looking Adult shop with its tatty handwritten sign, “No drugs. No hats.“. Headed off, Popper, Barry-Sean, Analyse this … Continue reading Live Review: The Felice Brothers / Craig Finn

We were turned on to this by the excellent Slowcoustic blog. We figured that, as it features MM fave, Wooden Wand then a re-post of sorts was in order. The marvellous Mr Wand has lent his talents to Good Saints who have recorded a split 7″ with Kill County. Take a listen to the wonderful Texas Moan. Order it here. a Continue reading Wooden Wand Again…In Good Saints
We’re loving Hate Smile, the advance single from the upcoming Is/Is full length. It is a song that is swathed in moody magnificence as distorted guitars and pounding percussion battle for supremacy in a maelstrom of compelling noise. Shoegaze is too easy a term for this bleakly bitter offering that is as heavy and menacing as it is beautiful. Download Is/Is – Hate Smile mp3 … Continue reading Mad Mackerel Recommends…Is/Is
Along with Owls and Wolves of various kinds, I think Whales must be one of the most popular animals to turn up in band names. The Ancient Whales are the latest and most certainly one of the better ones if their mix of melodic garage rock and hazy psychedelia is anything to go by. Try this track, Everyone from their new studio EP Birthing via Owlphabet … Continue reading Introducing >>> Ancient Whales
