Dan Sartain and his 50s style greased back rockabilly swagger and pencil-thin mustachioed menace have long been favourites here at Mad Mackerel. Therefore we are looking forward immensely to his forthcoming album Too Tough To Live which crams 13 tracks into 19 frenetic minutes of rock’n’roll. This is the first track from the album, the 80 second long Now Now Now featuring ex-Go Go Jane Wieldin. … Continue reading Dan Sartain: New Single & Album
Alice Michel is a French songstress who has provided us with this hauntingly effective and affecting cover of the Led Zeppelin classic Whole Lotta Love. Utilising piano, cello and an unashamedly feminine touch, it will stay with you long after the last note has faded. a Continue reading MM Shorts 68: Alice Michel Covers Led Zeppelin
So Barry-Sean was in his parents attic over Christmas sorting some stuff out and discovered some old mixtapes that we used to listen to a lot – this was one from 1987 that B-S has modernised into a digital playlist on his iTunes. Even though it is nearly 25 years ago – there are some cracking tunes on there from many of the cream of … Continue reading Blast From The Past – Barry-Sean Discovers ‘Lost’ 1987 Mixtape

Happy New Year! What better way to start than with a new band. A good new band. The Mutts. They are a no-holds-barred rock band from Chicago melding growled vocals with dirty blues inspired riffs and a righteous anger that somehow reminds us of the Drive-By Truckers playing with MC5 and fronted by Tom Waits. Check out the excellent fuzzed up, whiskey drenched Throwback and the … Continue reading New Year, New Band – The Mutts
One of the highlights of seeing the Villagers play live in Oxford about 18 months ago was the final song of the set, a poignant and heartbreaking song called Cecelia Her Selfhood. It turns out it has long been a live favourite, but only recently has it been finally recorded in the studio and an accompanying video made. Although we are a little late with it, we … Continue reading The Villagers Release Cecelia Video
And so here we have our top ten albums of the year. To be honest the order is fairly arbitrary – on another day it could be a completely different as really these ten records have so little between them in turns of the pleasure and enjoyment they gave us. If you’ve not acquainted yourselves with any of these then we’re pretty sure you won’t … Continue reading Mad Mackerel’s Albums Of The Year: Part 3 (10 – 1)
The last Friday of 2011. And so begins a slow walk to the end of another year. Ambushed by Christmas (my own fault, of course: same date every year, nothing to be scared of), tending sick animals and children, reigning in the oldies while fighting the desire to sleep spontaneously with bouts of manic activity that appeared to achieve very little, I am reminded that … Continue reading Mrs Mackerel’s TFI Friday (30th December)
