The Return Of Algernon Doll

The idiosyncratic and peculiar world of 24 year old singer-songwriter Algernon Doll caught our ears with his debut album of acerbic acoustics and raw, honest explorations of his struggles with extreme anxiety and bipolar disorder. His second album was equally engaging, but saw him moving chameleon like through musical styles.

His third album will see a release later this year in June, and those restless tendencies are still very much to the fore. The first taste from it calls to mind the halcyon days of Nirvana and Fugazi with the chiming guitars and distorted vocals of uptempo rocker, Spilt Milk Perfume.

New Album From Algernon Doll

We were pretty taken with our discovery of Algernon Doll’s debut long player, Camomile, last year. It was a record of uniquely off-kilter folk, and an often painfully raw and dark exploration of his struggles with extreme anxiety and bipolar disorder.

Now he is back with a follow-up in the shape of Citalo-pop, which is out now via Common Records. Taster track Anti-them indicates that this will be a different kettle of fish with the introduction of fuzzy guitars, layered vocals and no little distortion. In truth, this theme is carried throughout the record and is melded to tight, driven percussion and time changes galore.

The overall sense is one of ominous foreboding, still raw and unflinching, but this time using a more schizophrenic approach. Inspired by the likes of Red House Painters on Old Ramon, Mark Lanegan, Elliott Smith and Dinosaur Jr, there is no doubt that Algernon Doll continues to display a maturity beyond his years – you can order Citalo-pop via his Bandcamp page here.

ALgernon Doll Debut Album Out Today.

Algernon Doll’s debut album of off-kilter, deeply personal folk, Camomile, is out today via Newtown Products.

We posted about the record last month – a cathartic journey through a difficult year dealing with the mentally debilitating toils of extreme anxiety disorder and bipolar. The album documents the struggles Ewan Grant endured in his own mind and his own world, a world confined very much to the four walls of his flat.

To celebrate the release of the album, an exclusive download of the new single Son of A Gun, Brother To None is available to download for free.

Order the album via Bandcamp here.

Introducing >>> Algernon Doll

Introducing >>> Algernon Doll.

The term off-kilter is often overused when describing singer-songwriters and other folk inclined musicians. However, for Algernon Doll it is an adjective that fits perfectly.

The project of Ewan Grant and documenting a difficult year of mentally debilitating toils of extreme anxiety disorder and bipolar, the resulting record, Camomile is a thing of beauty – lavish, intense and splendid, but underpinned with a creeping sense of anxiety and discontent.

Make no mistake some of the tracks are not easy, treading as they do, a path of paranoia and loneliness – there are demons being wrestled with here. However, it is Algernon Doll’s unique, unsparing approach to doing so that sets the record apart and yes, makes off-kilter a perfect description (for once).

Grab yourself Spiral Sounds, the first track to be released from the album. Camomile is released on 26th November via Newtown Products.
